Increasing the minuend increases the difference by the same amount. Do not paste currency symbols, percent signs, scientific notation, or decimal-comma forms such as 1,5.
Subtrahend is also required and follows the same format. The startup example is 486.30. Increasing a positive subtrahend lowers the difference. Entering a negative subtrahend raises the difference because subtracting a negative is equivalent to adding its positive opposite. Worked example

How subtraction behaves
Order matters. In general, A – B is not equal to B – A; swapping the inputs reverses the sign of the result. Subtracting zero leaves the minuend unchanged, while subtracting a number from itself returns zero. Subtracting a negative number adds its magnitude, so 3 – ( – 6) becomes 3 + 6 = 9.

Common mistakes to avoid
Do not reverse the minuend and subtrahend unless you intend to change the sign. Keep the minus sign attached to a negative subtrahend, and distinguish 10 – ( – 3) from 10 – 3. Use a period for decimals; the calculator rejects ambiguous comma-decimal input rather than silently changing its meaning. For measurements or money, apply any required real-world rounding only after you understand the exact arithmetic result.
