What this calculator does

This calculator finds the exact difference between two simple fractions or two mixed numbers. It reduces each operand, identifies the least common denominator, rewrites both values as equivalent fractions, subtracts the numerators, and simplifies the final answer. It also supplies a decimal approximation and a transparent step table. The result is an exact arithmetic identity for valid integer inputs; it is not a measurement estimate and it does not decide how many decimal places are appropriate for a measured quantity.

When to use it

Use it to check homework involving unlike denominators, compare two fractional lengths or quantities, verify a recipe adjustment, or convert mixed-number subtraction into an improper-fraction calculation. How to calculate

Input guide

Fraction format is required and accepts either Simple fractions or Mixed numbers. Choose Mixed numbers when an operand includes a whole part, such as 3 1/2. Changing the format changes which fields participate in the calculation; it does not merely relabel the same numbers.

Each Whole number field is optional and appears only in Mixed numbers mode. Enter an integer from – 100,000 to 100,000, using plain digits or correctly grouped U.S. thousands such as 12,000. A value such as – 3 with a positive fractional part means the entire mixed number is negative. Leave the whole number blank when the operand is only a proper fraction. Do not type decimals or scientific notation.

Each Numerator is an integer from – 100,000 to 100,000. In Simple fractions mode it is required and may be negative; for example, – 3 over 5 represents – 3/5. In Mixed numbers mode, numerator and denominator form an optional pair: both may be blank when the operand is a whole number, but entering only one of the pair is invalid. When a nonzero whole number is present, use a nonnegative numerator to avoid an ambiguous double sign.

Each Denominator is a positive integer from 1 to 100,000. Zero and negative denominators are rejected because division by zero is undefined and this interface standardizes the sign in the numerator. A common mistake is to subtract denominators directly; denominators identify the size of each part and must first be converted to a shared value.

Output guide

Simplified result is the reduced exact difference. Mixed-number form expresses the same value with a whole part when its absolute value is at least one. Decimal value is a rounded display of the same rational number, useful for comparison but not a replacement for the exact fraction. Least common denominator is the smallest shared denominator after each operand is reduced. Common-denominator subtraction shows the equivalent numerators immediately before subtraction. The four summary pills repeat the current mode, LCD, result, and decimal so the most important state remains visible.

The Calculation steps table documents four exact stages: simplified operands, the LCD, equivalent fractions, and the reduced difference. A zero result means the two operands are equal. A negative result means the second operand is greater. Very large or very small values are still exact within the supported integer range; only the displayed decimal is rounded.

Worked example

The startup example is 7/8 – 3/4. Both operands are already reduced. The least common denominator of 8 and 4 is 8, so 3/4 becomes 6/8. Subtracting the numerators gives (7 – 6)/8 = 1/8. The fraction cannot be reduced further because 1 and 8 have no common factor greater than one. The calculator therefore displays 1/8 as both the simplified and mixed-number forms, 0.125 as the decimal value, and 8 as the LCD.

How fraction subtraction works

Fractions can be subtracted directly only when they refer to equal-sized parts. If denominators differ, the calculator finds their least common multiple and uses it as the least common denominator. Each operand is then multiplied by a form of one so its value stays unchanged while its denominator becomes the LCD.

a/b – c/d = (ad – bc) / bd, followed by reduction

Using the least common denominator instead of the raw product often keeps intermediate numbers smaller. Reduction uses the greatest common divisor of the result's numerator and denominator. Mixed numbers and signs

A mixed number combines a whole part and a fractional part. The calculator converts it to an improper fraction, performs the same LCD procedure, and converts the reduced result back to mixed form. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not subtract denominators. Convert both fractions to a common denominator, then subtract only the equivalent numerators.
  • Do not use zero as a denominator. A numerator may be zero, but a denominator may not.
  • Keep the sign attached to the full mixed number. A negative whole part with a negative numerator is ambiguous and is rejected when both parts are entered.
  • Use the exact fraction for further exact arithmetic. The decimal display is rounded to a practical number of digits.
