How to use the place value calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator analyzes a base-10 whole number or terminating decimal one digit at a time. It identifies each digit's place name, associates that position with a power of ten, calculates the digit's contribution, writes the number in expanded form, and produces a conventional US-English word form. It is useful for checking place-value homework, preparing teaching examples, comparing decimal positions, or verifying that a number has been copied with the decimal point in the intended location. It does not round the number, convert repeating decimals, or infer measurement units.
When to use it
Use it when a learner needs to distinguish tens from tenths, when you want a complete place-value chart for a classroom example, when you are checking expanded notation, or when a long number must be read aloud accurately. How to calculate

Input guide
Number is required. Enter a nonnegative or negative base-10 numeral using digits, an optional leading minus sign, and an optional period as the decimal marker. Correct US-style comma grouping is accepted, such as 12,345.67; ambiguous decimal-comma input such as 1,5 is rejected rather than silently interpreted. The supported range is up to 15 digits total, no more than 12 before the decimal point, and no more than 8 after it. Trailing decimal zeros are retained because they communicate place precision. Moving the decimal point changes every affected place, while changing one digit changes only that row's contribution. Scientific notation and currency symbols are intentionally rejected.
Output guide

In the table, Digit is the numeral symbol, Place name is its positional label, Exponent is the power in 10n, Factor is that power's decimal value, and Digit value is digit × factor. A zero digit therefore has a digit value of zero without erasing its place.
The underlying rule is positional notation: a digit's meaning depends on its position, and each position in base ten is a power of ten. For notation conventions in technical writing, see NIST's guidance on the decimal marker and grouping digits.
How place value works
Start at the ones place, which has factor 100 = 1. Every step to the left multiplies the factor by ten: tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. Every step to the right divides the factor by ten: tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and smaller places. This symmetry around the decimal point is why moving a digit one position left makes its contribution ten times larger, while moving it one position right makes it one tenth as large.
Zero is especially important. In 4,007, the two zeros contribute no value, but they preserve the thousands and ones positions of the nonzero digits. Removing them changes the number. The chart therefore keeps zero rows even though expanded notation normally omits zero terms.
Common mistakes
- Calling the first decimal place “ones.” The first place to the right is tenths, represented by 10 – 1.
- Reading 0.05 as five tenths. It is five hundredths because the 5 is two places to the right of the decimal point.
- Dropping internal zeros. The numbers 5.04 and 5.4 are not equal; the zero fixes the 4 in the hundredths place.
- Confusing a place factor with a digit value. In 700, the hundreds factor is 100, while the digit value is 7 × 100 = 700.
