How to use the Cake Pan Converter
What this calculator does
This calculator compares the geometric capacity of the pan named in a recipe with the pan you actually own. It estimates a Pans' volume ratio, converts that ratio into the percentage of each ingredient to use, and shows both capacities in cubic inches and U.S. cups. It is a scaling tool, not a guarantee of baking time, doneness, batter depth, or whether a particular batter is suitable for a pan. Pan shape, oven behavior, leavening, and the safe fill level still matter.
When to use it
Use it when substituting a round pan for a rectangular pan, scaling a recipe to a larger or smaller tin, comparing two pans before buying one, or estimating how much extra batter a celebration cake needs. The calculation is especially useful when diameters differ, because round-pan capacity changes with the square of the radius rather than directly with diameter.
How to calculate
- The calculator opens with a ready-to-use demonstration: a 6-inch round pan, 2 inches high, compared with a 7 × 11 × 2-inch rectangular pan. Results and a validated example XLSX are available immediately.
- Under Baking pan in recipe, choose the recipe Shape and enter every visible inside dimension.
- Under Your baking pan, choose your pan Shape and enter its inside dimensions.
- Read Pans' volume ratio and Use ... of every ingredient. Multiply each original ingredient amount by that ratio.
- Review the capacity bars and conversion table, then select Download Excel to save the current inputs and results. Reset clears the demonstration and may disable the download until complete valid dimensions are entered again.
Input guide
Shape is required for each pan and accepts Round, Square, or Rectangle. Choose the shape that matches the pan's interior, not its decorative rim. A round pan reveals Pan diameter; a square pan uses Pan width; a rectangle uses both Pan width and Pan length. Every dimension is required, entered in inches, and must be a positive decimal no greater than 200. Values such as 6, 8.5, or 11 are accepted; grouping separators, fractions such as “8 1/2,” scientific notation, and decimal commas are rejected to avoid ambiguity. Measure across the inside edges. Entering an outside measurement can overstate capacity.
Pan height is required for each pan and is also entered in inches. The startup value is 2. Increasing only your pan's height raises the ratio; increasing only the recipe pan's height lowers it. When both pans have the same height, the ratio is equivalent to comparing their base areas. Do not use the height of baked cake or the amount of batter you normally pour; use the usable interior wall height.
Output guide
Pans' volume ratio is an exact geometric comparison before display rounding: your pan volume divided by recipe pan volume. A value of 1.00× means equal capacity; above 1 means scale ingredients up; below 1 means scale down. Recipe pan volume and Your pan volume are shown in cubic inches. Volume difference and Cup difference show the signed capacity change, so a negative value means your pan is smaller. The summary pills repeat the ratio, ingredient percentage, and cup difference. The Conversion detail table lists each pan's shape, cubic-inch capacity, cup equivalent, and relative amount. The bar chart compares the two capacities from zero; it is a comparison, not a fill recommendation.
Worked example
For the startup round recipe pan, volume is π × (6 ÷ 2)² × 2 = 56.55 in³. The rectangular pan is 7 × 11 × 2 = 154.00 in³. Dividing 154.00 by 56.55 gives 2.72×, so use about 272.3% of every ingredient. One U.S. customary cup is 14.4375 cubic inches, so the pans hold about 3.92 and 10.67 cups geometrically. How the formulas work
Round volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × height
Square volume = width² × height
Rectangle volume = width × length × height
Ingredient multiplier = your pan volume ÷ recipe pan volume
The converter treats each pan as a simple cylinder or rectangular prism. That is a practical approximation for straight-sided pans. Fluted, tapered, bundt, tube, and novelty pans should be measured by filling them with water and measuring the water volume instead. Batter depth and baking time
A larger ingredient multiplier does not imply the same multiplier for baking time. If the batter depth stays similar, the time change may be modest; if the new pan makes a deeper cake, the center can need substantially longer. Begin checking before the expected finish time when scaling down and monitor carefully when scaling up.
