This calculator converts a household bread-spread routine into four practical planning measures: grams used, expected jar life, jars purchased, and estimated cost. It is useful for grocery budgeting, choosing a container size, comparing products with different densities, and checking whether a recurring food habit is materially affecting a monthly budget. It is an estimate rather than a nutrition recommendation, serving-size standard, or guarantee that a jar will last to an exact date.

When to use it

Use it before a grocery trip to decide how many jars to buy, when comparing bulk and standard package sizes, when estimating pantry needs for a family or shared household, or when replacing one spread with another that has a different density. It can also help cafés, camps, or small community kitchens create a rough purchasing forecast when the routine is stable.

How to calculate

Input guide

Product is required and identifies the spread whose density should be used. For example, Nutella uses 1.200 g/mL. Changing the product changes grams per teaspoon even when the spoon count stays the same. Do not assume equal spoonfuls of different foods weigh the same. Density is required, accepts a decimal in g/mL, and must be greater than zero and no more than 5. A realistic custom value is 1.10. Density is mass divided by volume; the calculator follows the metric relationship described by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology guidance on mass and SI units. A common mistake is entering grams per teaspoon instead of g/mL; divide teaspoon weight by 5 first.

Slices of bread is a required whole number from 1 to 100 per person per occasion; 2 is typical for a sandwich or toast meal. More slices increase use proportionally. Eating frequency is required and accepts 0.01 to 100 occasions per week; 7 means once daily. Enter weekly occasions, not days per month. Teaspoons per slice is required, accepts 0.01 to 50, and measures level U.S. teaspoons. The model uses 5 mL per teaspoon, consistent with the FDA's consumer guidance distinguishing standardized measuring spoons. Heaped spoons make actual consumption higher. People eating is a required whole number from 1 to 1,000; it multiplies the whole routine, so do not include occasional guests unless they are part of the average.

Jar capacity is required, accepts 1 to 100,000 grams, and should match the package's net weight; 400 g is the demonstration value. Larger jars last longer but do not reduce consumption. Cost of a jar is required, accepts $0 to $100,000, and should use the price actually paid. A zero price is valid for a gifted or already-stocked jar, producing zero costs while usage remains unchanged. Do not enter price per kilogram here.

Output guide

Jar lasts for is the primary estimate in days. It falls when slices, frequency, teaspoons, people, or density rise, and increases with jar capacity. Spread per teaspoon is an exact conversion under the assumed 5 mL teaspoon volume. Daily spread use averages weekly consumption over seven days. Jars per month uses an average month of 365/12 days, so it can be fractional for budgeting even though purchases occur in whole jars. Monthly cost and Annual cost multiply fractional jar demand by jar price; use whole-jar rounding separately when planning a specific shopping trip. Annual spread used expresses the same yearly mass in kilograms. The summary pills repeat Product, daily use, jar life, and annual cost from the same model. The breakdown table shows Day, Week, Month, and Year, with columns for spread used, jars needed, and estimated cost.

Worked example

With Nutella density of 1.200 g/mL, one teaspoon weighs 1.200 × 5 = 6.00 g. Two slices × 3 teaspoons × 2 people × 7 occasions per week equals 84 teaspoons per week, or 504 g. Average daily use is 504 ÷ 7 = 72 g. A 400 g jar therefore lasts 400 ÷ 72 = 5.56 days, displayed as 5.6 days. Annual use is 72 × 365 = 26.28 kg. At $6 per jar, annual cost is (26,280 ÷ 400) × $6 = $394.20.

The calculation is intentionally transparent: every result is a direct conversion or proportional estimate. Density values for manufactured foods can vary by recipe, temperature, air content, and measurement method. For careful inventory planning, weigh one typical spoonful several times and use the average. Practical interpretation

A fractional monthly jar count is best treated as an average spending rate, not a literal shopping quantity. For a shopping list, round up enough to cover the period and subtract unopened stock already on hand. For cost comparison, calculate each candidate spread with its own density, package weight, and price. A larger jar can have a lower unit price but may still be poor value if it expires or is discarded before use. This calculator does not model spoilage, promotional pricing, taxes by location, delivery fees, or changes in consumption over time.
