How to use the UK coin weight calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator estimates the combined mass and face value of a mixed collection of current UK circulating denominations. It multiplies the number of coins in each field by the standard mass for that denomination, adds those contributions, and converts the result into your selected display unit. It is useful for planning transport, checking till bags, estimating postage or storage loads, and performing a quick sense-check before using a physical scale. It does not authenticate coins, identify rare designs, or replace a calibrated scale where an exact measured mass is required.

When to use it

Use it when preparing change for banking, estimating how heavy a cash box will be, reconciling a charity collection, or checking whether a counted batch is broadly consistent with its expected weight. The official masses used here follow the circulating-coin specifications published in the Royal Mint coin design and specification resources.

How to calculate

  1. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration set, so results and the Excel export are available immediately.
  2. Replace the quantity in each denomination field with your own non-negative whole-number count. Use 0 when you have none of a coin.
  3. Choose grams, kilograms, ounces, or pounds from Weight unit. This changes presentation only; the canonical calculation remains in grams.
  4. Read the total weight, face value, count, average coin weight, contribution bars, and detailed table.
  5. Select Download Excel to create a validated workbook containing the current inputs and results. Reset clears all demonstration data and disables export until a complete valid state is entered again.

Input guide

1p coins, 2p coins, 5p coins, 10p coins, 20p coins, 50p coins, £1 coins, and £2 coins are required quantity fields. Each accepts a whole number from 0 to 10,000,000 with no sign, decimal point, exponent, currency symbol, or thousands separator. For example, enter 50 in 1p coins for fifty pennies. Increasing any quantity raises total count, total weight, and face value according to that coin's mass and denomination. A common mistake is entering the monetary amount rather than the number of physical coins. Weight unit is a required selector: grams and kilograms are metric; ounces and pounds use the international avoirdupois conversion. Changing the unit does not alter quantities or monetary value.

Output guide

Total weight is the sum of all denomination weights in the selected unit. Total face value is the exact nominal value of the counted coins in pounds sterling. Total coin count is the sum of all eight quantity fields. Average weight per coin divides total grams by total count and is shown only when at least one coin is present. Heaviest contribution identifies the denomination adding the most mass, not necessarily the most valuable denomination. The contribution bars compare each denomination's share of total mass on a common zero-based scale. The table reports denomination, quantity, standard weight per coin, total mass contribution, and face value contribution. Zero means no coins were entered; negative results are impossible because negative quantities are rejected.

Worked example

The opening example contains 50×1p, 40×2p, 30×5p, 25×10p, 20×20p, 15×50p, 35×£1, and 25×£2 coins. The weight calculation is 50×3.56 + 40×7.12 + 30×3.25 + 25×6.50 + 20×5.00 + 15×8.00 + 35×8.75 + 25×12.00 = 1,637.25 grams, displayed as 1.637 kg. The same coins total 24,000 pence? No: adding denomination values produces 8,130 pence, so the displayed face value is £81.30. This illustrates why mass and monetary value must be calculated separately.

Formula and assumptions

Total mass (g) = Σ(quantity × standard coin mass in grams). Total value (pence) = Σ(quantity × denomination in pence).

The standard masses used are 3.56 g for 1p, 7.12 g for 2p, 3.25 g for 5p, 6.50 g for 10p, 5.00 g for 20p, 8.00 g for 50p, 8.75 g for the current 12-sided £1, and 12.00 g for £2. Practical interpretation

Coin mass can be a useful control check, but it is not proof of an exact count. Manufacturing tolerances, wear, dirt, foreign objects, and mixed old coin specifications can create differences. For operational use, compare the estimate with a calibrated scale and investigate material variances rather than forcing the count to match. A high average weight usually means the batch contains more 2p, 50p, £1, or £2 coins; a low average suggests a larger share of 1p or 5p pieces. The face-value output is independent of physical wear because it is based only on denomination and count.
