What this calculator does

This calculator estimates the Treynor ratio, a risk-adjusted performance measure that divides a portfolio's return above a risk-free rate by the portfolio's beta. It helps answer a focused question: how much excess return did the portfolio produce for each unit of systematic, market-related risk? The result is useful for comparison, but it does not prove that a portfolio is suitable, forecast future performance, capture fees or taxes, or measure total risk from security-specific holdings.

When to use it

Use the calculator when comparing two diversified portfolios over the same period, reviewing a manager's historical performance relative to beta, testing how a different risk-free assumption changes the score, or checking whether a high return still looks attractive after market sensitivity is considered. How to calculate

Input guide

Beginning portfolio value is required and accepts a positive U.S. dollar amount such as 10,000 or $10,000.00. It is the denominator of the holding-period return, so a larger beginning value with the same dollar gain lowers the percentage return. Do not enter zero, a negative amount, scientific notation, or a value from a different date range.

Ending portfolio value is required and accepts a nonnegative U.S. dollar amount such as 11,200. It should reflect the portfolio at the end of the same period and should be adjusted consistently for deposits, withdrawals, and distributions before using a simple holding-period return. A higher ending value raises portfolio return and normally raises the Treynor ratio.

Risk-free rate is required and is entered as a percentage, for example 4 or 4%. It must use the same horizon as the portfolio return. Raising it reduces excess return and the Treynor ratio. A frequent mistake is mixing an annual Treasury yield with a one-month portfolio return without converting the rate to the same period. The U.S. Treasury publishes daily Treasury bill rates that can serve as a starting reference when the horizon is appropriate.

Portfolio beta is required and must be greater than zero; 1.20 is a realistic example. Beta measures sensitivity to a chosen market benchmark. A higher beta lowers the Treynor ratio for the same excess return. Beta near zero makes the ratio unstable, and negative beta requires specialized interpretation, so this calculator rejects zero and negative values.

Output guide

Treynor ratio is the primary estimate and is displayed as a percentage-equivalent amount of excess return per unit of beta. Higher positive values generally indicate stronger historical compensation for systematic risk when portfolios are otherwise comparable. Zero means the portfolio return equaled the risk-free rate. A negative result means it underperformed the risk-free rate over the selected period.

Portfolio return is the percentage change from beginning to ending value. Excess return subtracts the risk-free rate from that return. Value change is the dollar difference between ending and beginning value. Portfolio beta repeats the risk input so the denominator is visible beside the result. Worked example

With a beginning value of $10,000 and ending value of $11,200, the dollar gain is $1,200. Dividing $1,200 by $10,000 gives a 12.00% portfolio return. Subtracting the 4.00% risk-free rate leaves an 8.00% excess return. Dividing 8.00% by beta of 1.20 produces a Treynor ratio of 6.67%. That matches the first-open result, the breakdown table, and the exported workbook.

Interpretation and limitations

The Treynor ratio uses systematic risk rather than total volatility, so it is most informative for diversified portfolios where security-specific risk has been reduced. A portfolio can have a strong Treynor ratio and still experience large total swings or concentration risk. Compare Treynor ratios only when the portfolios use the same return period, risk-free rate convention, and market benchmark. Small or unstable beta estimates can create very large, misleading ratios.
