Spending breakdown
Waste over time
| Period | Total subscription spend | Estimated used value | Estimated waste |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | $120.00 | $84.00 | $36.00 |
| 1 year | $1,440.00 | $1,008.00 | $432.00 |
| 5 years | $7,200.00 | $5,040.00 | $2,160.00 |
This is a straight-line estimate. It assumes your monthly spending and unused share remain unchanged and does not include price increases, cancellation fees, taxes, or investment returns.
How to use the Subscription Waste Calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates the portion of your recurring subscription spending that delivers little or no value to you. It converts a monthly spending total and an estimated unused percentage into monthly, annual, and five-year waste. Use it as an audit aid for streaming services, apps, software, memberships, delivery plans, cloud storage, newsletters, and other auto-renewing charges. It does not decide which individual service you should cancel, verify whether a charge is contractual, or predict future price changes.
When to use it
Use it before a monthly budget review, after scanning bank and card statements, when a free trial converts to a paid plan, or before renewing a group of annual services. It is also useful for setting a concrete savings target: the annual waste estimate shows the cash that could remain available if the unused portion were eliminated.
How to calculate
- The calculator opens with a complete example: $120.00 of monthly subscriptions and an estimated 30.00% unused share. The example results and Excel workbook are ready immediately.
- Replace Total monthly subscription spending with the sum of all recurring monthly charges. Convert an annual charge to a monthly equivalent by dividing it by 12 before adding it.
- Enter Estimated unused share as a percentage from 0 to 100. Base it on actual usage rather than whether a service feels inexpensive.
- Read Annual subscription waste first, then compare the monthly and five-year estimates with your budget priorities. Use the breakdown and table to understand the same estimate over different periods.
- Select Download Excel to export the current validated inputs and outputs. Reset clears the demonstration and results; Download Excel remains unavailable until complete valid values are entered again.
Input guide
Total monthly subscription spending is a required U.S.-dollar amount from $0 to $1,000,000. Enter digits with an optional comma grouping and period decimal, such as 120.00. Higher spending raises every waste estimate in direct proportion. Do not paste a currency code, scientific notation, or a decimal comma such as “120,50”; ambiguous formats are rejected. Include annual plans only after dividing their annual price by 12.
Estimated unused share is a required percentage from 0% to 100%, such as 30.00. A higher percentage increases estimated waste and reduces estimated used value. Zero means you believe every subscription dollar is useful; 100 means you treat all subscription spending as waste. A common mistake is to count a lightly used service as fully useful without comparing its cost with how often it is actually used.
Output guide
Annual subscription waste is the primary estimate: monthly spending multiplied by the unused share and by 12. Monthly waste is the same estimate for one month. Five-year waste extends it across 60 unchanged months. Monthly used value is the portion not classified as waste, while Annual total spend is all subscription spending before the unused-share adjustment. The header pills repeat monthly waste, annual waste, and used value for quick scanning. In the spending breakdown, Monthly total, Estimated used amount, and Estimated unused amount reconcile to the same monthly total. The table columns show total spend, used value, and waste for one month, one year, and five years. These are planning estimates, not recommendations or guaranteed savings.
Worked example
With the startup values, monthly waste is $120.00 × 30% = $36.00. Annual waste is $36.00 × 12 = $432.00, and five-year waste is $36.00 × 60 = $2,160.00. The remaining monthly used value is $120.00 – $36.00 = $84.00. These figures match the first-open results, table, and workbook.

The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends reviewing recurring expenses as part of a complete spending picture; its budgeting resources can help place subscription spending in context. How the estimate works
Monthly waste = monthly subscription spending × unused share
Annual waste = monthly waste × 12
Five-year waste = monthly waste × 60
The model is intentionally transparent. It uses no compounding and assumes the same spending and usage pattern throughout the selected period. That makes it suitable for identifying the size of a recurring leak, but not for forecasting inflation, promotional price expirations, or the return you might earn by investing the savings.
Build a more accurate estimate
- Review at least 12 months of statements so annual renewals are not missed.
- Include app-store, payment-wallet, and work-related software charges billed to personal cards.
- Judge use by the last 30 to 90 days, not by the original reason for subscribing.
- Check cancellation deadlines and any remaining contract term before treating the estimate as immediately recoverable cash.
