What this calculator does

This calculator estimates how a regular yearly contribution to a Sukanya Samriddhi Account may grow over the scheme's 21-year maturity period. It separates the projected maturity value into total contributions and total interest, identifies the estimated maturity year, and provides a year-by-year projection. It is a planning model, not an account statement, tax opinion, eligibility decision, or promise of future returns. The result assumes a constant interest rate for all 21 years even though the Government of India can revise small-savings rates.

When to use it

Use the calculator when comparing affordable annual contribution levels, testing how a different notified rate changes the long-term estimate, preparing a household savings plan, or documenting a simple projection for education and marriage funding discussions. It is also useful for seeing the six-year growth period after the modeled 15 years of deposits end.

How to calculate

  1. The calculator opens with a ready-to-use demonstration: ₹150,000 contributed annually, an 8.2% annual rate, and a 2026 opening year. The example results and a validated Excel workbook are immediately available.
  2. Replace Annual contribution with the amount you expect to deposit each financial year. Use digits and an optional decimal point; commas and the rupee symbol are accepted only in standard Indian/English grouping.
  3. Update Annual interest rate to the rate you want to test. Enter the percentage as a number such as 8.2, not as the decimal 0.082.
  4. Enter the four-digit Account opening year. Read the maturity value, contribution total, interest total, interest share, maturity year, and projection table as they update live.
  5. Select Download Excel to export the current assumptions and all 21 projection rows. Reset clears the demonstration values and results; Download Excel then remains unavailable until a complete valid set of inputs is entered again.

Input guide

Annual contribution is required and is measured in Indian rupees. The accepted planning range is ₹250 to ₹150,000 per year, consistent with the minimum and maximum described by the National Savings Institute's SSY overview. A realistic example is ₹75,000. A higher contribution raises both the contributed principal and the interest earned. Do not enter a monthly amount unless you first convert it to the annual total.

Annual interest rate is required and accepts a percentage from 0% through 20%. The demonstration uses 8.2%. Raising the rate increases every year's interest and has a compounding effect on the maturity value. A common mistake is entering 0.082 when you mean 8.2%; this calculator expects 8.2.

Account opening year is required and accepts a whole four-digit year from 2015 through 2100. For example, 2026 produces an estimated maturity year of 2047. This field changes calendar labels and the maturity year, but not the amount, because the model holds the contribution and rate constant.

Output guide

Estimated maturity value is the projected closing balance after account year 21. Total contributions is the exact identity of annual contribution multiplied by 15 deposit years. Total interest is maturity value minus contributions. Maturity year is opening year plus 21. Interest share shows what percentage of the projected maturity value comes from modeled interest; zero means the selected rate is 0%, while a higher percentage reflects stronger compounding.

The Year-by-year projection uses six columns. Account year runs from 1 to 21. Calendar year maps each account year to the opening year. Opening balance is the prior year's closing value. Annual deposit is the selected contribution in years 1 – 15 and zero afterward. Interest earned applies the selected annual rate to the opening balance plus that year's deposit. Closing balance is opening balance plus deposit plus interest. These are estimates driven by the three inputs.

Worked example

With the startup values – ₹150,000 deposited at the beginning of each of the first 15 account years, 8.2% annual interest, and a 2026 opening year – the first year earns ₹12,300 of interest and closes at ₹162,300. Repeating the same method through year 15 and then allowing the balance to grow without new deposits for years 16 – 21 produces a projected maturity value of ₹71,82,119.17 in 2047. Contributions total ₹22,50,000.00, modeled interest totals ₹49,32,119.17, and interest represents 68.67% of the projected maturity value.

Model assumptions and practical cautions

The projection uses annual compounding and assumes deposits are made early enough to earn a full year of interest. Under the actual scheme, interest is calculated using prescribed balance and timing rules and credited at the end of the financial year. Rates can change by quarter, so a constant-rate projection is best treated as a scenario rather than a forecast. The National Savings Institute's historical SSY rate table is useful for understanding how rates have varied since inception.

Do not treat the maturity value as inflation-adjusted purchasing power. A large nominal corpus many years from now may buy less than the same amount today. Also confirm account-opening eligibility, deposit timing, default-account rules, withdrawal conditions, and tax treatment with the official scheme documents or a qualified adviser. The calculator does not model missed deposits, partial withdrawals, rate changes, penalties, or early closure.
