What this calculator does

This calculator converts one known gross wage into a semi-monthly wage and a consistent set of hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly equivalents. A semi-monthly schedule has two pay periods in each month, so the model uses exactly 24 pay periods per year. It is useful for comparing job offers, checking payroll setup, translating an annual salary into a typical gross paycheck, and reconciling wages stated in different periods. It does not calculate take-home pay, tax withholding, overtime premiums, benefits, bonuses, or the exact cash received on a particular payday.

Input guide

Known wage period is required and accepts Hourly wage, Daily wage, Weekly wage, Monthly wage, or Yearly wage. It tells the model which annualization formula to use. For example, selecting Yearly wage with $72,000 divides that amount across 24 semi-monthly periods. A common mistake is selecting Monthly wage while entering an annual amount.

Wage amount is a required positive USD amount. Enter values such as 72000, 72,000, or 72000.00; currency symbols, negative values, scientific notation, and decimal commas are rejected to avoid ambiguous interpretation. A higher amount increases every equivalent proportionally.

Hours per week is required only when Known wage period is Hourly wage. It accepts a plain decimal from 0.01 through 168; 40 is a conventional full-time example. More hours raise the annual and semi-monthly equivalents for the same hourly rate. Do not enter hours per pay period.

Days per week is required only when Known wage period is Daily wage. It accepts a plain decimal from 0.01 through 7; 5 is a common example. More days raise annualized pay for the same daily rate. Do not enter days per month.

Output guide

Semi-monthly wage is the estimated gross amount for one of 24 equal pay periods. Monthly wage is annual pay divided by 12. Weekly wage is annual pay divided by 52. Daily wage uses the selected Days per week assumption, while Hourly wage uses Hours per week. The summary pills repeat the fixed 24 paychecks/year convention plus annual and weekly equivalents. The table's Pay period, Periods per year, and Equivalent gross wage columns show the same canonical model in a comparison-ready form. Zero is not treated as meaningful pay, and negative wages are invalid.

Worked example

With the startup yearly wage of $72,000, semi-monthly pay equals $72,000 ÷ 24 = $3,000.00. Monthly pay is $72,000 ÷ 12 = $6,000.00, and weekly pay is $72,000 ÷ 52 = $1,384.62. Using 40 hours per week gives 2,080 hours per year, so the hourly equivalent is $72,000 ÷ 2,080 = $34.62. Using five days per week gives 260 workdays per year, so the daily equivalent is $276.92. These are gross conversions, not a prediction of net pay.

Semi-monthly versus biweekly pay

Semi-monthly means twice per calendar month, normally producing 24 pay periods in a year. Biweekly means every two weeks, normally producing 26 pay periods. The annual gross amount can be identical under either schedule, but the amount per check differs because it is divided by a different count. Employers also need to follow applicable payday rules; the Department of Labor maintains a summary of state payday requirements.

Formula and assumptions

The calculator first converts the known wage to an annual amount. Hourly pay is multiplied by hours per week and 52; daily pay is multiplied by days per week and 52; weekly pay is multiplied by 52; monthly pay is multiplied by 12; yearly pay is already annual. Semi-monthly pay is then annual pay divided by 24. The conversion is an arithmetic identity under the selected work schedule. Actual payroll can differ because of overtime, variable hours, bonuses, unpaid time, deductions, and calendar rules.
