How to use this scrap silver calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator estimates how much pure silver is contained in an item and multiplies that fine-silver weight by a price for pure silver. It is useful for jewelry, flatware, bullion, coins, and mixed silver objects when you know the item's gross weight and approximate fineness. The result is an intrinsic or “melt” value, not a guaranteed cash offer, appraisal, tax value, or collectible value. Hallmarks, condition, rarity, maker, and dealer spreads can make an actual transaction price materially different.

When to use it

Use it to compare several scrap lots before visiting a buyer, to check whether a quoted offer is broadly consistent with the metal content, to convert a hallmark such as 925 or 800 into a percentage, or to estimate the fine-silver content of bullion and household silver. How to calculate

  1. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: 219.5 grams of sterling silver at a pure-silver price of $31.00 per troy ounce. The results and an example Excel workbook are available immediately.
  2. Replace Weight of scrap silver with the gross weight of your item or lot, then select grams, troy ounces, ordinary ounces, kilograms, or pounds.
  3. Enter Silver purity as a percentage or choose a hallmark preset. Enter 92.5 for sterling, 90 for coin silver, 80 for an 800 mark, or 99.9 for fine bullion.
  4. Enter the Pure silver price and choose whether that quote is per troy ounce, gram, or kilogram. Precious metals are commonly quoted by troy ounce; a troy ounce is not the same as an ordinary avoirdupois ounce.

Input guide

Weight of scrap silver is required and accepts a positive decimal number using a period as the decimal separator. Choose the matching unit. For example, 219.5 grams means the entire object weighs 219.5 g before applying purity. Increasing the weight increases the pure-silver weight and value proportionally. Do not enter a troy-ounce figure while leaving the unit set to ordinary ounces.

Silver purity is required and must be greater than 0% and no more than 100%. A 925 hallmark is entered as 92.5%, not 925%. The preset selector fills common values but remains editable through Custom. Higher purity raises the fine-silver content for the same gross weight. Plated items require special caution because the gross object weight is not the weight of the thin silver coating.

Pure silver price is required and must be a positive amount in U.S. dollars per selected weight unit. A realistic example is $31.00 per troy ounce. The value changes one-for-one with this price. Use a bid or dealer reference when estimating a possible sale, and remember that the live market price can change frequently. The U.S. Mint's silver bullion coin information confirms that American Eagle silver bullion coins contain one troy ounce of .999 fine silver.

Output guide

Silver value is the calculated intrinsic value in U.S. dollars. It is an estimate driven by gross weight, purity, and normalized pure-silver price. A zero result appears only when a valid mathematical input produces zero, but this interface requires positive weight and price, so missing or invalid entries produce an empty state instead. Pure silver weight reports fine metal in grams, while Pure silver weight (troy) reports the same quantity in troy ounces. Price per gram normalizes the entered market quote. Non-silver alloy weight is the balance of the gross weight after subtracting fine silver; it is not a laboratory assay of which other metals are present.

The summary pills repeat purity, fine-silver troy weight, and estimated value from the same canonical model. In the calculation table, Step names each operation, Formula shows the current substituted arithmetic, and Result shows the corresponding finite value. These are exact identities subject only to displayed rounding.

Worked example

With 219.5 g of sterling silver, the fine-silver fraction is 92.5 ÷ 100 = 0.925. Fine silver therefore equals 219.5 × 0.925 = 203.0375 g. Using 31.1034768 g per troy ounce gives about 6.528 oz t. At $31.00 per troy ounce, the intrinsic value is about $202.36. The non-silver portion is 219.5 – 203.0375 = 16.4625 g. Formula and interpretation

Pure silver weight = gross weight × purity fraction
Silver value = pure silver weight × pure-silver price in the same weight unit

Unit consistency is the key technical issue. The calculator first converts the entered weight to grams and the entered quote to dollars per gram, then performs the value calculation. It also converts the fine weight to troy ounces for reporting. Common mistakes and tradeoffs

  • Confusing 925 parts per thousand with 925 percent. Enter 92.5%.
  • Using ordinary ounces for a price quoted per troy ounce. The two ounce systems differ.
  • Treating plated objects as solid alloy. A plated item's gross weight usually cannot be multiplied by a sterling purity.
  • Assuming melt value equals a buyer's offer. Buyers may deduct refining, assay, and operating costs.
  • Scrapping a collectible coin or signed object before checking numismatic, antique, or maker value.
