How to use this salary to hourly calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator converts one gross annual salary into equivalent pay for several time intervals. It is useful for putting a salaried offer and an hourly offer on the same schedule basis, estimating the implicit value of an hour of salaried work, checking a staffing budget, or explaining a compensation package. It does not calculate taxes, payroll deductions, benefits, bonuses, unpaid leave, overtime premiums, or the legal classification of a worker. The result is an arithmetic conversion based on the hours and weeks you enter.

When to use it

  • Compare a $65,000 salaried role with a contract rate quoted per hour.
  • Estimate how longer weekly hours reduce the effective hourly value of a fixed salary.
  • Convert an annual labor budget into weekly or monthly planning amounts.
  • Check whether a recruiter's stated hourly equivalent uses a 40-hour, 52-week assumption.

How to calculate

  1. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: $65,000 annual salary, 40 hours per week, and 52 weeks per year. Its results and example Excel workbook are available immediately.
  2. Replace Annual salary with the gross yearly amount you want to evaluate. Enter digits with an optional decimal point; commas and a leading dollar sign are accepted.
  3. Set Hours per week to the average schedule the salary is expected to cover. Then set Weeks per year to the number of weeks represented by the salary.
  4. Read Hourly wage first, then use the daily, weekly, monthly, minute, second, and conversion-table values for comparisons. Select Download Excel to export the current typed model.
  5. Reset clears the demonstration and all results. Download Excel is then disabled until all three required fields contain valid values again.

Input guide

Annual salary is required currency greater than zero. A realistic entry is $65,000. Higher salary increases every converted pay amount proportionally. Do not enter take-home pay unless you intentionally want to convert net income; the usual comparison is gross pay. Hours per week is a required number greater than zero and no more than 168; 40 is a common example. More hours lower the implied hourly and daily rates for the same salary. Avoid entering only billable hours when the salary also covers administration or meetings. Weeks per year is required and must be greater than zero and no more than 52; use 52 when the annual salary is paid throughout the year, including paid leave. Using fewer weeks raises the implied hourly rate because the same annual salary is spread over fewer hours.

Output guide

Hourly wage is annual salary divided by annual hours and is the main conversion. Daily wage uses one-fifth of weekly hours, not an assumed fixed eight-hour day. Weekly pay equals annual salary divided by weeks per year. Monthly pay always equals annual salary divided by 12. Per minute and Per second are exact time-unit conversions of the hourly result, shown mainly for scale. Annual hours is hours per week multiplied by weeks per year. The Pay conversion table repeats these amounts with the hours represented by each interval. A high or low result is not a recommendation; it simply reflects the entered salary and schedule. Zero is not accepted because it would not create a meaningful compensation conversion.

Worked example

With the startup values, annual hours are 40 × 52 = 2,080. The hourly wage is $65,000 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25 per hour. A modeled workday is 40 ÷ 5 = 8 hours, so daily pay is 8 × $31.25 = $250.00. Weekly pay is $65,000 ÷ 52 = $1,250.00, and monthly pay is $65,000 ÷ 12 = $5,416.67. These exact values appear on first open and in the generated workbook.

Learn more: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that many published annual wage estimates use a standard 2,080-hour year, while noting that actual annual pay may differ for schedules above or below that assumption. See the BLS wage-estimate calculation method.

Interpretation and limitations

The formula is hourly wage = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). This is a gross-pay identity, not a payroll forecast. Overtime can materially change hourly compensation for covered workers; the U.S. Department of Labor overtime fact sheet explains the federal time-and-one-half rule and its scope. Tax treatment is separate from this conversion; the IRS guidance on wages and salaries describes federal gross-income reporting. Benefits, paid leave, retirement contributions, insurance, bonuses, and job stability may make two offers with the same cash equivalent economically different.
