What this calculator does. This converter expresses the same torque in newton-metres and pound-force inches. Torque is the turning effect of a force applied at a distance from an axis. The converter is useful for translating a specification, tool setting, or engineering note between SI and customary units. It does not determine the correct tightening torque for a particular fastener; that depends on the fastener, material, lubrication, joint design, and manufacturer instructions. The BIPM SI Brochure explains why torque is written in newton-metres even though it has the same dimensions as energy.
When to use it. Use this calculator when a torque wrench is marked in lbf·in but a service manual specifies N·m; when comparing small fastener settings across metric and U.S. documentation; when checking calibration records that use different units; or when preparing a clear conversion record for a worksheet or maintenance file.

Input guide. Convert from is a required unit selector. Choose Newton-metres (N·m) for an SI torque, such as 10 N·m, or Pound-force inches (lbf·in) for a customary torque, such as 88.5 lbf·in. Changing the selector reverses the calculation while preserving the entered magnitude; a common mistake is selecting the unit you want as output rather than the unit you already have. Torque value is a required plain number from 0 through 1,000,000. For example, enter 10, 2.5, or 88.5075. Commas, unit text, scientific notation, negative values, and nonfinite values are rejected to prevent silent reinterpretation. Increasing the value increases the converted result in direct proportion.
Output guide. Converted torque is the main exact unit conversion, displayed with up to six decimal places. Input in N·m and Input in lbf·in show the same physical torque in both units regardless of the selected direction. Zero means zero torque; negative torque direction is intentionally outside this magnitude-only tool. The Nearby torque equivalents table gives 0.25×, 0.5×, 1×, 2×, and 5× versions of the current value. Its columns are Multiplier, Newton-metres (N·m), and Pound-force inches (lbf·in). These are mathematical comparisons, not recommendations.
Worked example. The startup value is 10 N·m. The exact conversion factor used is 1 N·m = 8.850745791327184 lbf·in. Therefore, 10 × 8.850745791327184 = 88.50745791327184 lbf·in, displayed as 88.5075 lbf·in. The 0.5× row represents 5 N·m and 44.2537 lbf·in, while the 2× row represents 20 N·m and 177.015 lbf·in. The factor follows from the exact relationship between the metre and inch together with the conventional pound-force definition. In engineering notation, lbf·in makes the force component explicit; the shorter “in-lb” is common in tool documentation but can be ambiguous outside a torque context.
Use the number as a conversion only. Before applying torque to hardware, verify the equipment manufacturer's procedure, the tool's range and calibration status, and whether the specification assumes clean, dry, lubricated, or thread-locked fasteners.
