How to use this Nm to ft-lb calculator
What this calculator does. This converter expresses the same torque in three common units: newton-metres (N·m), pound-force feet (ft-lb), and pound-force inches (in-lb). It is useful when a tool, drawing, service manual, or fastener specification uses a different unit from the scale on your torque wrench. The calculation is an exact unit identity based on defined force and length relationships; it does not decide the correct torque for a particular bolt, material, lubricant, or assembly.
When to use it. Use the converter when translating a metric vehicle service specification to an imperial torque wrench, checking an engineering drawing that mixes SI and U.S. customary units, comparing tool ranges before selecting a wrench, or converting a low-torque inch-pound setting into N·m. Always follow the equipment manufacturer's specified procedure. A unit conversion cannot compensate for incorrect thread condition, lubrication, tightening sequence, or tool calibration.

Input guide. Newton-metres accepts a required finite decimal in N·m, such as 100. Positive, zero, and negative values are mathematically convertible, although a negative sign normally indicates the opposite rotational direction rather than “less torque.” Foot-pounds accepts a required finite decimal in pound-force feet, such as 73.7562. Do not confuse ft-lb of torque with foot-pound as an energy label; the dimensions may look similar, but the physical interpretation differs. Inch-pounds accepts a required finite decimal in pound-force inches, such as 885.075. Enter only one edited value at a time; the other fields become synchronized outputs. The accepted format uses a period as the decimal separator, optional leading sign, and optional comma grouping. Scientific notation and mixed unit text are rejected to avoid silent reinterpretation.
Output guide. Foot-pounds is the primary converted result and is displayed to four decimal places. Newton-metres and Inch-pounds show the same torque in the other units. The formula line identifies the active source value and conversion factor. The header pills show the fixed unit identities. In the Quick conversion table, “Multiplier” indicates the fraction or multiple of the current torque, while each torque column gives the corresponding unit value. Zero remains zero in every unit. A negative result preserves rotational direction. Very large values are valid only while all computed numbers remain finite.
Worked example. The startup value is 100 N·m. Using the conversion factor, 100 × 0.737562149 = 73.7562149 ft-lb, displayed as 73.7562 ft-lb. Multiplying the foot-pound value by 12 gives 885.0745788 in-lb, displayed as 885.0746 in-lb. The 50% table row therefore shows 50 N·m, 36.8781 ft-lb, and 442.5373 in-lb. These same canonical values are written as numeric cells in the downloadable workbook rather than copied from rounded screen text.

Formula and interpretation
The canonical relationship used here is 1 lbf·ft = 1.3558179483314004 N·m. Therefore, ft-lb = N·m ÷ 1.3558179483314004, and N·m = ft-lb × 1.3558179483314004. Inch-pounds are obtained from foot-pounds by multiplying by exactly 12. Because this is a linear conversion, doubling the source torque doubles every equivalent result, and changing the sign changes only the indicated direction.
Common mistakes
- Do not read “lb” as pound mass. Torque specifications use pound-force.
- Do not divide by 12 when converting ft-lb to in-lb; multiply by 12 because each foot contains 12 inches.
- Do not round an intermediate conversion too early. Keep full precision until the final display or tool setting.
- Do not treat a converted number as a fastening recommendation. Use the exact specification and procedure supplied for the assembly.
