What this calculator does
This calculator converts a duration stated in months into years using the calendar identity that one year contains twelve months. It gives both a decimal result and a mixed years-and-months result. The decimal result is useful for calculations, reports, age or service-duration comparisons, and spreadsheet work. The mixed result is often easier to read in everyday language. This tool converts a duration unit; it does not determine the number of days between two calendar dates, because individual months have different lengths.
When to use it
Use it when translating a lease, subscription, warranty, project, training period, child age, employment tenure, or repayment term from months into years. It is also useful when a form asks for years but your source record is expressed in months, or when you need a consistent decimal-year value for analysis.

Input guide
Months is the only required input. Enter a non-negative finite number measured in calendar months. Examples include 6, 18, 30, or 42.5. Increasing the input increases every converted result proportionally. Do not type words, a percent sign, scientific notation, a decimal comma such as 1,5, or a negative value. A fractional month is allowed mathematically, although whether it is meaningful depends on your source data.
Output guide
Decimal years is the primary conversion and equals Months ÷ 12. Whole years is the integer number of complete twelve-month blocks. Remaining months is the leftover portion after those complete years; for fractional inputs it may also be fractional. Years and months combines those two values in readable form. Months per year shows the fixed conversion factor, 12. The summary pills repeat the decimal and whole-year values so the result stays easy to scan. Worked example
For the startup example, 30 months ÷ 12 = 2.5 years. Two complete years account for 24 months, leaving 6 months. Therefore the same duration can be written as 2.5 years or 2 years 6 months. The equality is exact under the twelve-month calendar convention.

Formula and interpretation
The arithmetic is linear: divide the month count by 12. The reverse conversion multiplies years by 12. Because the relationship is fixed, doubling the month input doubles the decimal-year output. Zero months converts to zero years. A value below 12 months produces a decimal below one year and zero complete years.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying by 12 instead of dividing when converting months to years.
- Reading 2.5 years as 2 years 5 months. The decimal .5 means half a year, which is 6 months.
- Assuming every month has 30 days. That approximation can differ from calendar reality.
- Using a decimal comma in a field configured for a decimal point. Ambiguous input is rejected instead of silently reinterpreted.
