Formula, precision, and interpretation

The conversion uses inches = millimeters ÷ 25.4. The inverse relationship is millimeters = inches × 25.4. Since 25.4 is exact, any uncertainty comes from the original measurement and from how many digits you choose to display, not from the conversion factor itself. For example, a caliper reading of 25.40 mm may communicate more measurement resolution than a rough ruler reading of 25 mm, even though both can be converted mathematically.

The decimal result is displayed to four places because that is detailed enough for many everyday comparisons. The workbook retains the underlying numeric value rather than exporting only the rounded screen text. When a technical drawing or inspection process specifies a tolerance, keep enough digits to avoid introducing an avoidable rounding error.
