This converter changes a volume stated in milliliters into the equivalent number of microliters. The relationship is exact within the metric unit system: one milliliter equals one thousand microliters. Volume in milliliters is the only required input. Enter a plain decimal number measured in mL, for example 0.024, 2.5, or 100. Values must be finite and at least zero. Grouped numbers may use commas in the standard English pattern, such as 1,250.5. Decimal-comma notation such as 1,5 is rejected because it is ambiguous under this calculator's documented format. Scientific notation is also rejected. Increasing this input increases every equivalent volume proportionally; doubling the input doubles every output. A common mistake is to type a microliter quantity into this field and then multiply it by one thousand again.
Output guide
Volume in microliters is the exact conversion, shown in µL. It is driven only by the milliliter input and equals mL × 1,000. A zero result means the entered volume is zero; larger values simply represent larger volumes and are not inherently better or worse. Volume in liters equals mL ÷ 1,000. Volume in cubic millimeters has the same numeric value as microliters because 1 µL equals 1 mm³. The summary pills repeat the fixed ratio, current input, and current result. Worked example
With the startup value of 2.5 mL, multiply by 1,000: 2.5 × 1,000 = 2,500 µL. The same amount is 0.0025 L because 2.5 ÷ 1,000 = 0.0025, and it occupies 2,500 mm³ because each microliter is one cubic millimeter. The comparison table therefore shows 1.25 mL = 1,250 µL, 2.5 mL = 2,500 µL, and 5 mL = 5,000 µL.

Formula and unit logic
The prefix milli- represents one-thousandth of a base unit, while micro- represents one-millionth. Their ratio is therefore 10⁻³ ÷ 10⁻⁶ = 10³. That is why converting mL to µL moves the decimal point three places to the right. The reverse conversion moves it three places to the left. Because these are defined unit relationships, conversion does not introduce uncertainty; uncertainty comes from the original measurement and the equipment used to obtain it.
Common mistakes
- Dividing by 1,000 when converting from mL to µL. The correct operation is multiplication.
- Confusing µL with mL because the symbols are small. Check the prefix before recording or dispensing.
- Assuming 1 mL always means one gram. Mass depends on density; volume conversion alone cannot determine mass.
- Rounding too early. Keep the exact converted value and round only to the precision justified by the original measurement.
