Why the factor is 1,000
The prefix “milli” represents 10 – 3, while “micro” represents 10 – 6. Their exponents differ by three, so the units differ by 103, or 1,000. Moving from the smaller microgram unit to the larger milligram unit therefore divides the number by 1,000. Moving back multiplies by 1,000.
Keep the unit attached to every written number. A bare value such as “250” is incomplete because 250 mcg and 250 mg differ by a factor of one thousand.
