How to use the Mbps converter
What this calculator does. This tool converts a data-transfer rate between common decimal bit-rate and byte-rate units: b/s, kb/s, Mb/s, Gb/s, Tb/s, B/s, kB/s, MB/s, GB/s, and TB/s. It is useful for translating an internet-plan speed into an approximate file-transfer throughput, comparing network equipment specifications, checking whether two quoted rates are actually equivalent, and preparing consistent figures for documentation or spreadsheets. It performs a unit identity, not a prediction of real-world download speed; protocol overhead, congestion, storage performance, Wi-Fi conditions, and server limits can make observed throughput lower.
When to use it. Use the converter when an internet service is advertised in megabits per second but a browser reports megabytes per second, when a router or network interface is specified in gigabits per second, when a storage workflow is measured in megabytes per second, or when you need one normalized set of rates for an engineering or purchasing comparison. The underlying relationship is based on the conventional eight-bit byte described in the IETF requirements for Internet hosts, while decimal prefixes follow the BIPM SI Brochure.

- Replace Transfer rate with the numeric rate you know. Use a period for decimals, such as 12.5. The field is required, must be finite and non-negative, and does not accept scientific notation, commas, or unit text.
- Choose the matching From unit. Pay close attention to capitalization: b means bits and B means bytes.

Input guide. Transfer rate is a required decimal number representing the magnitude in the selected source unit. A realistic value is 300 for a 300 Mb/s broadband plan. Larger values produce proportionally larger results; zero is valid and converts to zero in every unit. A common mistake is typing “300 Mbps” into the numeric field or using a decimal comma such as “1,5”; both are rejected to prevent silent reinterpretation. From unit is required and identifies the scale and whether the source is measured in bits or bytes. For example, Mb/s means one million bits each second, while MB/s means one million bytes each second. To unit is required and selects the output scale. Changing either unit does not change the underlying base rate; it only changes how that rate is expressed.
Output guide. Converted rate is the exact unit conversion at practical display precision. Bits per second and Bytes per second show the canonical base-unit forms that drive every other output. Megabits per second is useful for network and ISP specifications, while Megabytes per second is often easier to compare with file-copy displays. The Equivalent transfer rates table presents the same canonical rate across base, kilo, mega, giga, and tera scales for both bit and byte families. These are exact decimal conversions; a very small result is not zero unless it is actually zero, although the displayed text may use scientific notation for extreme magnitudes.
Worked example. The startup example begins with 300 Mb/s. Because one megabit is 1,000,000 bits, the base rate is 300 × 1,000,000 = 300,000,000 b/s. One byte contains 8 bits, so 300,000,000 ÷ 8 = 37,500,000 B/s. Dividing by 1,000,000 converts base bytes per second to megabytes per second, producing 37.5 MB/s. The same model gives 0.3 Gb/s and 37,500 kB/s, matching the first-open table and exported workbook.

Mbps versus MB/s
Mbps is commonly used for network link rates and internet service plans. MB/s is commonly used by operating systems, browsers, and storage tools when showing how much file data moves each second. Since 1 byte equals 8 bits, the numeric MB/s value is one-eighth of the corresponding Mb/s value. Thus, 80 Mb/s equals 10 MB/s, and 1 GB/s equals 8 Gb/s.
Why real downloads may be slower
The conversion itself is exact, but a network connection rarely delivers payload data at the full advertised line rate. Packet headers, retransmissions, encryption, Wi-Fi interference, shared access, server throttling, and disk speed can all reduce observed throughput. Use this calculator to keep units consistent, then treat the result as a theoretical upper-bound conversion rather than a guaranteed download measurement.
