How to use the pounds to stone calculator
What this calculator does. This calculator converts a weight between pounds and stone. It is useful when a source gives body mass, luggage weight, sporting measurements, or historical records in one of these units and you need the equivalent in the other. The conversion is an exact unit identity based on one stone equaling fourteen pounds; it is not a health assessment, shipping quote, or recommendation about an appropriate body weight.
When to use it. Use it to read a UK or Irish weight stated in stone, convert a US-style pound value for a form or conversation, check a manual calculation, or express a decimal-stone result as whole stone plus remaining pounds.

Input guide. Weight in lbs is a required non-negative decimal measured in pounds. It accepts ordinary decimal notation such as 196 or 154.5, with a period as the decimal separator. Increasing it increases the stone result in direct proportion. Do not enter unit letters, grouping commas, decimal commas, negative values, or scientific notation. Weight in stone is the reverse-direction required field and follows the same format rules; a realistic example is 11.5. Editing either input makes that field the source and updates the other field, so avoid trying to type in both simultaneously as independent quantities.
Output guide. Converted weight shows the result in the opposite unit from the field most recently edited. Pounds and Stone show the same canonical weight in each unit. Whole stone is the integer number of complete 14-pound groups. Remaining pounds is the non-negative remainder after those whole groups are removed. The table rows Pounds entered, Decimal stone, and Mixed stone and pounds present the same result in three practical formats. A zero input validly produces zero in every output; very large valid values remain exact within normal floating-point limits.
Worked example. For the startup value, divide 196 pounds by 14 pounds per stone: 196 ÷ 14 = 14. Therefore, the first-open result is exactly 14 st. Because 196 contains fourteen complete groups of fourteen, the mixed-unit result is 14 st 0 lb. For another example, 155 pounds gives 155 ÷ 14 = 11.0714285714 stone, which is 11 st 1 lb.

Formula and interpretation
The underlying equations are stone = pounds / 14 and pounds = stone × 14. Decimal stone is best when further calculation is needed because it preserves the result as one number. Mixed stone and pounds is often easier to speak or read: the whole-stone component is the floor of the decimal-stone value, and the remainder is the pounds left after subtracting fourteen times that whole number.
Common mistakes
Do not confuse stone with short tons, metric tonnes, or kilograms. Do not divide by 16; sixteen is the number of ounces in a pound, whereas fourteen is the number of pounds in a stone. Also note that the symbols lb and st are unit labels, not text that belongs inside the numeric input. Keeping the entries purely numeric makes validation predictable and protects the workbook from malformed values.
