Pounds per square foot is a required non-negative decimal pressure in lbf/ft² when used as the active source. Enter ordinary decimal notation such as 144, 100, or 250.5, using a period for the decimal separator. Commas, percent signs, scientific notation, unit text, negative values, and nonnumeric characters are rejected to avoid ambiguous interpretation. Increasing this value increases PSI proportionally: doubling psf doubles psi. A common mistake is treating “pounds” as mass without an area; this field represents pound-force distributed over each square foot.
Pounds per square inch is the reverse required source when you edit that field. It accepts the same plain, non-negative decimal format; 1 is a realistic example. Increasing PSI increases psf by a factor of 144. Do not confuse psi with psig or psia: those suffixes identify the pressure reference, while this converter changes only the area unit. Worked example
The startup example enters 144 psf. Because one square foot contains 12 × 12 = 144 square inches, divide by 144: 144 ÷ 144 = 1 psi. Converting that result to SI pressure gives 1 × 6,894.757293168 = 6,894.757293168 Pa, displayed as 6,894.757 Pa. In reverse, entering 1 psi multiplies by 144 and returns 144 psf. This exact area relationship is why no empirical correction factor is needed.
Understanding the units and limits
Pressure is force divided by area. The NIST definition of pound-force distinguishes force from pound mass, while the BIPM overview of SI units provides context for pascals and SI measurement. The numerical conversion does not change whether a pressure is gauge, absolute, or differential; preserve that reference designation separately.
