Why lb means pound
The letters “lb” come from the Latin word libra, a historical unit and balance-related term. English kept the abbreviation even though the spoken and written unit became “pound.” The singular abbreviation is lb, and “lbs” is commonly used informally for plural quantities. In technical style guides, unit symbols generally do not take a plural ending, so 25 lb may be preferred in formal scientific or engineering text. Everyday labels, product listings, and fitness records often use 25 lbs.
Because the factor is exactly one, there is no loss of precision. A value with three decimal places stays the same to three decimal places, and an integer stays an integer.
