What this calculator does. This tool converts a pressure expressed in kilopascals (kPa) into pounds-force per square inch (psi). It applies the fixed unit identity 1 psi = 6.894757293168 kPa, or equivalently 1 kPa = 0.1450377377 psi. The result is a mathematical unit conversion, not a judgment about whether a tire, vessel, compressor, hydraulic system, or other component is operating safely. Always compare a converted value with the equipment manufacturer's specified pressure range and the correct distinction between gauge and absolute pressure.
When to use it. Use this calculator when a pressure gauge, service manual, weather report, engineering specification, or product datasheet uses kPa while another source uses psi. Input guide. Pressure in kilopascals is the only required control. It accepts a nonnegative finite decimal written with a period as the decimal separator; grouped numbers, scientific notation, unit text, commas, and negative values are rejected to prevent ambiguous interpretation. A realistic entry is 220 kPa. Increasing the input increases every converted result in direct proportion. Zero is allowed and converts exactly to zero psi. A frequent mistake is typing “220 kPa” into the field rather than entering only 220, or using a decimal comma such as 1,5, which this calculator deliberately rejects.

Understanding kPa, psi, and pressure conventions
A kilopascal equals 1,000 pascals, and one pascal is one newton of force distributed over one square metre. PSI expresses pound-force over one square inch. Because the units use different force and area definitions, the numerical values differ even when they describe the same physical pressure. The conversion factor is fixed; it does not depend on temperature, altitude, the substance under pressure, or the size of a vessel.
What can change is the pressure reference. Gauge pressure is measured relative to the surrounding atmosphere, while absolute pressure is measured relative to a vacuum. Converting a gauge reading from kPa to psi keeps it a gauge reading; it does not turn it into absolute pressure. For atmospheric context, the standard atmosphere is exactly 101.325 kPa, as documented in the NIST Guide to SI conversion factors. That value converts to approximately 14.6959 psi.
Precision and common mistakes
Four decimal places are usually more than enough for everyday conversion, while the calculator preserves additional internal precision to prevent compounding errors. Avoid rounding the factor to 0.15 when accuracy matters; at 1,000 kPa that shortcut gives 150 psi instead of about 145.0377 psi. Also verify whether the source uses kPa, MPa, Pa, bar, or psi. A value of 1 MPa equals 1,000 kPa, so confusing those prefixes changes the pressure by a factor of 1,000. For safety-critical work, follow the applicable technical standard and calibrated-instrument procedure rather than relying on a unit conversion alone.
