How to use this knots to mph calculator

A common mistake is writing “knots per hour.” Because a knot already means one nautical mile per hour, “knots per hour” would describe acceleration rather than speed.

Formula and unit relationships

The factor follows from the international nautical mile of 1,852 meters and the international statute mile of exactly 1,609.344 meters. Because both length definitions are fixed, the knot-to-mph conversion factor is fixed as well. Interpreting knots in context

Knots are common in navigation because nautical miles relate naturally to latitude on charts. In weather reporting, knots may describe sustained wind or gust speed. In aviation, a reported speed may be indicated, calibrated, true, or ground speed; converting the unit does not remove those distinctions. In marine use, speed through water and speed over ground can also differ because of currents. Always preserve the original measurement context when communicating the converted value.
