How to use the Inch Converter
What this calculator does
This calculator takes one length expressed in inches and converts it into eleven other length units: millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, feet, yards, statute miles, nautical miles, solar radii, and light-years. It is useful for translating measurements between technical drawings, product dimensions, travel or mapping references, marine distances, and scientific scales. The result is a mathematical unit identity, not a measurement of an object's actual size or uncertainty; the accuracy of the final answer still depends on the accuracy and significant figures of the number you enter. The core relationship is exact: the NIST definition of the international inch states that one inch equals exactly 25.4 millimeters.
When to use it
Use the converter when checking whether an inch-based component fits a metric specification, translating furniture or screen dimensions for an international audience, converting road or survey distances between customary and metric units, or comparing an ordinary length with nautical and astronomical reference units. How to calculate

Input guide
Length in inches is the only required input. It accepts a finite, nonnegative decimal number from 0 through 1 × 1015 inches. A value such as 36 means exactly thirty-six inches; 0 is allowed and produces zero in every output. Increasing the input increases every converted result in direct proportion. A common mistake is entering a comma as a thousands separator or decimal separator; this calculator rejects ambiguous comma-formatted text rather than guessing. Another mistake is including “in” inside the field, even though the adjacent unit label already defines the input.
Output guide
Length in centimeters is the primary output and equals inches × 2.54. The live summary pills repeat the current centimeter, foot, and yard equivalents for quick scanning. Each number is an exact conversion identity based on the stated factor, subject only to display rounding. A zero result means the entered length is zero; a very small scientific-notation result is expected for astronomical units. Negative lengths are outside this converter's supported domain and are rejected.
Worked example
The startup example uses 36 inches. For centimeters, multiply 36 by 2.54 to obtain 91.44 cm. For feet, divide 36 by 12 to obtain 3 ft. For yards, divide the feet result by 3 – or divide inches by 36 – to obtain 1 yd. Millimeters are 36 × 25.4 = 914.4 mm, and meters are 914.4 ÷ 1000 = 0.9144 m. Conversion factors and interpretation

The calculator first treats the entered inch value as the canonical source. Metric results follow directly from the exact 25.4-millimeter inch. Customary results follow the exact international relationships of 12 inches per foot, 3 feet per yard, and 1,760 yards per statute mile. The nautical-mile result uses 1,852 meters per nautical mile. Solar radii and light-years are scale comparisons based on standard nominal or defined reference values; they are not practical substitutes for precision astronomical modeling.
Rounding and significant figures
Displayed values use enough digits to keep ordinary conversions useful while avoiding unreadably long decimals. The workbook stores the canonical numeric values rather than copying rounded screen text, so spreadsheet users can apply their own number formats. When a source measurement is approximate, do not report more meaningful precision than the original measurement supports. For example, an object measured as 10 inches to the nearest inch should not be interpreted as having millimeter-level measurement certainty merely because the exact conversion factor produces 254 millimeters.
