Input guide
Measurement in inches accepts a required nonnegative decimal number in inches, using a period for decimals and no scientific notation. A realistic entry is 29. Increasing it increases the centimeter result in direct proportion. A common mistake is typing a unit symbol into the field; enter only the number because “in” is already shown beside it. Measurement in centimeters follows the same rules in centimeters; 73.66 is the startup example. Editing this field converts in the reverse direction. Avoid comma decimals such as 73,66 because this calculator deliberately uses the unambiguous period-decimal convention.

Why 2.54 is exact
The inch is defined through the metric system rather than measured by an approximate physical comparison. NIST's conversion-factor publication explains that an inch corresponds to 2.54 centimeters exactly. This means a calculator should use division by 2.54 for the reverse conversion, not a rounded factor such as 0.39. A rounded reciprocal may be suitable for mental estimation, but it introduces avoidable error in software and spreadsheets.
Precision and significant digits
An exact conversion factor does not make the original measurement more precise. If a board was measured only to the nearest inch, showing many decimal places after conversion can overstate confidence. NIST's guidance for writing SI measurements recommends keeping a sensible number of significant digits based on the source measurement. This calculator retains canonical precision internally and uses compact display formatting, while the exported workbook keeps numeric cells available for further formatting.
Understanding centimeters in SI
A centimeter is one hundredth of a metre.
