Worked example
For the startup example, one inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, so the calculation is 175 ÷ 2.54 = 68.8976377953 inches. Rounded for display, that is 68.90 inches. Dividing by 12 gives 5.7414698 total feet, which is 5 whole feet plus 8.90 inches. The same length is 1.7500 meters and 1,750 millimeters.
How the conversion works
The core relationship is exact: 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters. From that identity, centimeters are divided by 2.54 to obtain inches, meters are multiplied by 100 and divided by 2.54, feet are multiplied by 12, yards are multiplied by 36, and millimeters are divided by 25.4. Reading feet and inches correctly
A value such as 68.90 inches can be written as 5 feet 8.90 inches because five feet account for 60 inches and the remainder is 8.90 inches. Do not read 5.7415 feet as 5 feet 74 inches: the decimal part of a foot must be multiplied by 12 to become inches. Common mistakes
