How to use the height converter

What this calculator does. This tool converts one physical height into four common representations: centimeters, meters, total inches, and feet plus inches. It is useful when a form, product specification, travel document, sports record, or health record uses a different length system from the one you normally use. The calculation is an exact unit identity based on internationally defined conversion factors; it does not estimate a person's future height, assess health, or replace a measurement taken with suitable equipment.

When to use it. Use the converter when completing an international form that asks for centimeters, checking whether a stated height in feet and inches matches a metric record, comparing doorways or equipment clearances, or translating measurements for clothing, fitness, and sporting contexts. For precision work, keep the original measured value and avoid implying more significant digits than the measurement supports. NIST explains that unit conversion involves a numerical factor together with an appropriate choice of rounding and significant digits in its unit conversion guidance.

How to calculate. The calculator opens with a ready-to-use demonstration of 175 centimeters, so the results and Excel workbook are available immediately. Follow these steps:

  1. Choose an Input format: Centimeters, Meters, Inches, or Feet and inches. When you change formats, the current valid height is converted into the newly selected input fields.
  2. Replace the demonstration value. For a single-unit format, enter one positive decimal using a period as the decimal separator. For Feet and inches, enter whole feet and an inches remainder from 0 up to, but not including, 12.
  3. Read Feet and inches as the primary result, then review Centimeters, Meters, Total inches, and Decimal feet. The summary pills repeat the most useful forms for quick scanning.
  4. Use the conversion details table to see the relationship behind each output. Select Download Excel to save the current inputs, exact numeric outputs, formulas, and notes in a validated .xlsx workbook.
  5. Select Reset to clear the demonstration and all calculated content. Reset does not restore 175 cm. Download Excel is disabled until you enter another complete valid height.

Input guide. Input format is required and controls how the height is entered. Centimeters accepts a positive decimal such as 175; meters accepts a positive decimal such as 1.75; inches accepts a positive decimal such as 68.9. A decimal comma such as 1,75 is rejected rather than silently interpreted. Height is the required single value shown for those three formats. Increasing it increases every converted output in direct proportion. Do not paste unit letters into the field. In Feet and inches mode, Feet is a required nonnegative whole number such as 5, and Inches is a required decimal remainder such as 8.9. An inches value of 12 or more is rejected because it should be carried into the feet field.

Output guide. Feet and inches separates total inches into whole 12-inch feet and the remaining inches; it is an exact conversion displayed to two decimals for the remainder. Centimeters is the metric value displayed to two decimals, while Meters is the same length divided by 100 and displayed to four decimals. Total inches expresses the entire height in one customary unit and is driven by the exact identity 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters. Decimal feet divides total inches by 12 and is useful for calculations that require a single numeric feet value. A zero or missing result means the current input is incomplete or invalid, not that the measured person or object has zero height.

Worked example. The startup value is 175 cm. Dividing by 100 gives 1.75 m. Dividing 175 by the exact 2.54 centimeters per inch gives 68.8976378 inches. Dividing by 12 gives 5.7414698 decimal feet. Five whole feet account for 60 inches, leaving 8.8976378 inches, displayed as 5 ft 8.90 in. These are the same first-open values used in the result cards, table, and downloadable workbook. The exact relationship between SI length and customary units is documented in the NIST Guide to the SI conversion factors.

How the conversion works

The meter is the SI base unit for length. One meter contains exactly 100 centimeters, and the international inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters. A foot contains exactly 12 inches. Because these relationships are exact, the conversion model first normalizes the entered height to centimeters and then derives every other form from that one canonical value.

meters = centimeters ÷ 100
inches = centimeters ÷ 2.54
decimal feet = inches ÷ 12
remaining inches = inches – 12 × whole feet

The NIST overview of the SI unit of length describes the meter's role in the International System of Units. For measurement reporting, round only to a precision supported by the original measurement. A height recorded to the nearest centimeter should not be treated as though its converted inch value were known to many decimal places, even though the mathematical conversion can produce them.

Common mistakes and interpretation tips

  • Do not read 5.74 decimal feet as 5 feet 74 inches. The fractional part is a fraction of one foot; multiply it by 12 to obtain inches.
  • In feet-and-inches format, keep the inches remainder below 12. For example, 5 ft 12 in is normalized as 6 ft 0 in.
  • Use a period for decimals. The strict parser rejects ambiguous comma formatting and scientific notation.
  • Retain the original measurement for records. Conversion changes the unit, not the quality or uncertainty of the measurement.
