How to use the hectares to acres calculator
What this calculator does. This tool converts a land area between hectares and acres and also reports the equivalent square metres. It uses the exact international relationship implied by one acre equalling 4,046.8564224 square metres and one hectare equalling 10,000 square metres. The result is a unit conversion, not a survey, title measurement, boundary determination, valuation, or legal description of a parcel.
When to use it. It is useful when comparing a metric land listing with an acre-based listing, checking agricultural or forestry records, translating planning documents between measurement systems, or preparing a consistent area figure for a spreadsheet, report, or property discussion.
How to calculate. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: 3.6 hectares and its equivalent 8.8957937328 acres. An Excel workbook for that example is ready immediately. To use your own value:
- Replace the value in Hectares when your source measurement is metric, or replace Acres when your source measurement uses the customary land unit.
- Use a period for decimals, such as 1.5. Do not enter commas, scientific notation, unit words, negative values, or a blank field as the active source.

Input guide. Hectares is a required nonnegative decimal area measured in hectares; 3.6 is a realistic example. A higher value increases acres and square metres proportionally. A common mistake is typing “3,6,” which this calculator rejects rather than silently interpreting. Acres follows the same rules but uses acres; 8.8957937328 is the startup equivalent. Editing acres makes that field the source and recalculates hectares. Zero is valid and means zero area, while negative land area and nonfinite values are outside the supported domain.
Output guide. Area in acres is the primary converted area in acres, rounded to four decimals for display. Area in hectares is the metric land area, also displayed to four decimals. Area in square metres provides the same area in the SI-derived square-metre basis and is displayed to two decimals when needed. These are exact unit identities before display rounding. Worked example. With 3.6 hectares, multiply by 10,000 to obtain 36,000 square metres. Divide 36,000 by 4,046.8564224 square metres per acre, or equivalently multiply 3.6 by 2.471053814671653. The result is 8.89579373281795 acres, shown as 8.8958 acres. Reversing the conversion returns exactly 3.6 hectares before display rounding.

Formula and interpretation
One hectare is 10,000 square metres. One international acre is 4,046.8564224 square metres. Therefore, hectares to acres is calculated as hectares × 10,000 ÷ 4,046.8564224, which gives the factor 2.471053814671653. Acres to hectares uses the reciprocal factor 0.40468564224. Because both units represent area, the relationship is linear: doubling the input exactly doubles every output.
