What this calculator does

This converter expresses one volume in three equivalent forms: US gallons, UK gallons, and cubic feet. It is useful when a specification, tank label, shipping document, or building plan uses a different gallon definition from the one you need. The calculation is an exact unit conversion based on legally defined unit relationships; it does not estimate a container's usable capacity, account for wall thickness, or determine how much liquid a partly filled irregular vessel contains.

When to use it

Use it to translate a US tank rating into cubic feet, compare US and imperial gallon capacities, check a supplier's volume specification, or prepare a consistent set of units for engineering notes and spreadsheets. The distinction between the two gallon systems matters: an imperial gallon is larger than a US liquid gallon.

UK gallons accepts a required nonnegative decimal when edited. It means the imperial gallon, exactly 4.54609 litres under UK law. A realistic equivalent example is 41.633709. Changing it updates the other fields linearly. A frequent mistake is assuming “gallon” has the same size in both systems.

Cubic feet accepts a required nonnegative decimal when edited. One cubic foot equals 1,728 cubic inches. A realistic example is 6.684028. Larger cubic-foot values produce larger gallon equivalents. Enter volume, not a length in feet; “cubic” indicates three-dimensional capacity.

The current NIST Handbook 44 measurement tables document 231 cubic inches per US gallon and 1,728 cubic inches per cubic foot. For the imperial definition, the UK's Units of Measurement Regulations 1995 state that one gallon equals 4.54609 litres.

Formula and precision

The converter uses canonical cubic feet as the internal bridge. US gallons are multiplied by 231/1,728. UK gallons are multiplied by 4.54609/28.316846592 because a cubic foot equals exactly 0.028316846592 cubic metres, or 28.316846592 litres. Reverse conversions divide by the same factors. No intermediate display rounding is fed back into the calculation, so repeatedly switching the edited source does not intentionally compound rounding error.

For practical reporting, six decimal places provide fine resolution for typical household, construction, storage, and shipping quantities.   • For tank capacity, calculate the vessel's geometric volume first, then convert that volume here. Real usable capacity may be lower because of fittings, freeboard, or inaccessible space.
