How to use the gallon converter
What this calculator does
This calculator converts one nonnegative volume into a broad set of US customary, Imperial, metric, and cubic units. It is useful when a recipe, tank specification, shipment document, appliance manual, or engineering note uses a unit different from the one you need. The calculation is an exact unit conversion based on fixed conversion factors; it does not estimate container capacity from dimensions, account for measurement uncertainty, or convert a liquid's volume into weight.
When to use it
Use it to translate a fuel or water quantity from US gallons to liters, compare Imperial and US gallons, turn cubic feet or cubic inches into a liquid-volume unit, or scale kitchen volumes among cups, fluid ounces, tablespoons, and teaspoons. The distinction between gallon systems matters: one Imperial gallon is larger than one US liquid gallon, while a US dry gallon is a separate unit.
How to calculate
- The converter opens with a demonstration of 5 US liquid gallons. Its primary result is already set to liters, the table is populated, and Download Excel is immediately available.
- Replace the value in Amount. Enter digits with an optional decimal point, such as 2.5. Commas, scientific notation, negative values, and mixed text are rejected so that ambiguous entries are not silently reinterpreted.
- Choose the matching From unit. The calculator first converts that amount into liters, which acts as the canonical intermediate value.
- Choose the Primary result unit. This changes the emphasized result without changing the underlying volume. Read the summary cards and the complete conversion table for other equivalent units.
- Select Download Excel to create a fresh OOXML workbook from the current validated values. Select Reset to clear the demonstration data; the workbook button then stays unavailable until a complete valid amount is entered again.
Input guide
Amount is required and accepts a plain nonnegative decimal using a period as the decimal separator. For example, enter 12.75 for twelve and three-quarter source units. A larger amount increases every converted result in direct proportion; zero is valid and converts to zero in every unit. Do not paste a unit label into this field. From unit is required and identifies the unit represented by Amount. For example, select “Cubic foot (ft³)” when a tank volume is stated in cubic feet. Choosing the wrong gallon system is a common source of error. Primary result unit is required and controls only the emphasized output and workbook summary. It does not alter the source quantity or the conversion table.
Output guide
Primary result shows the converted amount in the selected target unit. The US liquid gallons, Imperial gallons, Liters, and Cubic feet cards provide quick cross-system checkpoints. The pills repeat three especially useful live values. In the Conversion table, “Converted value” is the equivalent amount for each named unit, while “Liters per unit” is the fixed factor used to translate that unit into liters. These are exact conversion identities subject only to display rounding, not recommendations or estimates.
Worked example
The startup example uses 5 US liquid gallons. The legally defined factor is 3.785411784 liters per US gallon, so the calculation is 5 × 3.785411784 = 18.92705892 liters. Rounded to the displayed precision, the primary result is 18.9271 L. The same volume is about 4.16337 Imperial gallons and 0.668403 cubic feet. Those values are also written as numeric cells in the startup workbook.

Conversion method and common mistakes
The calculator uses liters as a neutral bridge. For any source unit, it multiplies Amount by that unit's liters-per-unit factor. It then divides the resulting liters by the target unit's factor. Written compactly:
target amount = source amount × source liters per unit ÷ target liters per unit
This method prevents a large web of pair-by-pair formulas and keeps every output internally consistent. It also makes useful checks easy: 1 US gallon must equal exactly 4 US quarts, 8 US pints, 128 US fluid ounces, and 16 US customary cups. The Imperial family has its own exact relationships, but its gallon is not the same size as the US gallon. Another frequent mistake is confusing fluid ounces, which measure volume, with ounces used for mass. Converting a liquid volume to mass requires the liquid's density and temperature, so that is intentionally outside this converter's scope.
