What this calculator does
This calculator converts ordinary mass between grams and avoirdupois ounces. It is useful when a recipe, parcel label, workshop specification, nutrition note, or product description uses one unit while your scale or document uses the other. The conversion is an exact unit identity based on 1 ounce = 28.349523125 grams; the displayed result is rounded only for readability. It does not convert fluid ounces, which measure volume, and it does not use the troy ounce used for precious metals.

Input guide
Grams is a required non-negative decimal mass in grams when it is the field you edit. Plain decimal notation is accepted, including values such as 100, 14.5, or 0. Use a period as the decimal separator; scientific notation, unit letters, commas, negative values, and ambiguous formatted text are rejected. Increasing grams increases ounces in direct proportion. A common mistake is entering a fluid-ounce quantity, which is a volume and cannot be converted to grams without knowing density.
Ounces is the corresponding non-negative decimal mass in ordinary avoirdupois ounces. A realistic example is 8 ounces, which converts to 226.796185 grams. Editing this field makes it the conversion source. Do not use this field for troy ounces; one troy ounce is a different mass. NIST publishes the exact relationship in its mass-unit guidance.
Output guide
Converted mass is the main rounded equality, showing grams and ounces together. Exact ounces shows the ounce result with up to nine decimal places, while Exact grams shows the gram result with up to nine decimal places. The two summary pills repeat the current gram and ounce values in compact form. The formula line indicates which direction was last used: division when grams drive the conversion, or multiplication when ounces drive it. Zero is a valid mass and produces zero in the other unit; negative and non-finite values are invalid.
Worked example
The startup example uses 100 g. Dividing by the exact factor gives 100 ÷ 28.349523125 = 3.527396194958... ounces. The main result rounds this to 3.5274 oz, while the exact card shows 3.527396195 oz. The workbook stores the canonical numeric values rather than copying rounded display text.
Understanding grams and ounces
The gram belongs to the International System of Units through the kilogram, the SI base unit of mass. The ounce used here is the international avoirdupois ounce, exactly one-sixteenth of an international pound. Formula and precision
For grams to ounces, divide grams by 28.349523125. For ounces to grams, multiply ounces by the same factor. Because the relationship is linear, doubling the source mass doubles the converted mass. The calculator retains full JavaScript numeric precision in its model and workbook, then rounds the visible equality to four decimal places and detailed cards to nine decimal places. For everyday cooking, fewer decimals are usually appropriate because ingredient scales and measuring practices have limited precision.
