How to use this foot to centimeter calculator
What this calculator does
This converter changes a length between feet and centimeters. It uses the exact international definition that one foot equals 30.48 centimeters, so the conversion itself is an exact identity rather than an estimate. The tool is designed for a single linear measurement. It does not calculate area, volume, body-mass index, or the separate feet-and-inches notation sometimes used for height.
When to use it
Use the calculator when checking furniture dimensions, converting a person's height for a form, translating construction or room measurements, or comparing product specifications written in different measurement systems. The underlying relationship follows the internationally standardized inch and foot; the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology explains the modern basis of the SI unit of length and related conversions.
How to calculate
- The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: 7 feet and its exact equivalent, 213.36 centimeters. The Excel download is ready immediately for this example.
- To convert from feet, replace the value in Foot. The Centimeter field, main result, formula, summary pills, and nearby conversion table update live.
- To convert in the opposite direction, edit Centimeter. The calculator divides that value by 30.48 and updates the Foot field.
- Choose Download Excel to save the current inputs, outputs, formula, and nearby table as a validated .xlsx workbook.
- Choose Reset to clear both data fields and all calculated content. After Reset, the Excel button is disabled until a complete valid value is entered again.
Input guide
Foot accepts a required non-negative decimal number when it is the field you are editing. Enter plain en-US decimal notation, such as 7, 5.5, or 0.25. Commas, unit words, scientific notation, negative values, and nonnumeric characters are rejected instead of being silently reinterpreted. Increasing the Foot value increases the centimeter result proportionally. A common mistake is typing a combined height such as “5 ft 8 in”; this converter expects feet as a decimal, so 5 feet 8 inches would first be expressed as approximately 5.6667 feet.
Centimeter follows the same input rules and becomes the source field whenever you edit it. A realistic value is 180 cm. Increasing centimeters increases feet proportionally. Do not add “cm” inside the field because the adjacent unit label already supplies the unit. Zero is valid and converts exactly to zero in the other unit.
Output guide
Converted length is the primary result. Its unit follows the field opposite the one you most recently edited. The secondary Feet and Centimeters cards always show both equivalent values. Formula displays the exact multiplication or division used. The direction pill reports whether the current operation runs from feet to centimeters or centimeters to feet, while the precision pill identifies the displayed decimal precision. The Nearby conversion table lists five whole-foot reference points centered around the current foot value, along with their centimeter equivalents and their difference from the current input. These outputs are conversions, not recommendations.
Worked example
For the startup example, multiply 7 feet by the exact factor 30.48 centimeters per foot: 7 × 30.48 = 213.36. Therefore, the first-open result is 213.36 cm. Reversing the operation gives 213.36 ÷ 30.48 = 7 feet. The same values are used by the visible cards, the conversion table's center row, and the initial Excel workbook.
Why the conversion factor is exact
The centimeter is one hundredth of a meter. Since 1959, the international yard has been defined as exactly 0.9144 meter, making one international foot exactly 0.3048 meter, or 30.48 centimeters. That is why no approximation is needed in the core conversion. For historical context and official U.S. usage, NIST provides a detailed explanation of the U.S. survey foot and its retirement. The distinction matters mainly in legacy geospatial work; ordinary height, furniture, and product conversions use the international foot.
Formula and precision
To convert feet to centimeters, use centimeters = feet × 30.48. To convert centimeters to feet, use feet = centimeters ÷ 30.48. The calculator keeps full finite precision internally and displays up to six decimals while trimming unnecessary trailing zeros. For common whole-foot measurements, two decimal places are enough because multiplying by 30.48 naturally produces hundredths of a centimeter. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures publishes the authoritative SI Brochure, which defines the modern metric system used for centimeter measurements.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not multiply centimeters by 30.48 when converting to feet; divide instead.
- Do not confuse decimal feet with feet-and-inches notation. A decimal part of a foot represents a fraction of 12 inches.
- Do not use the old U.S. survey foot for ordinary conversions. Its legacy difference is tiny but relevant in specialized historical surveying datasets.
- Keep the measurement one-dimensional. Square feet and square centimeters require squaring the linear conversion factor, while cubic units require cubing it.
