Input guide
Feet is a required non-negative decimal whenever it is the field you are editing. Enter plain en-US numeric notation, such as 5, 5.5, or 1,250.25; scientific notation, unit text, decimal commas, and negative values are rejected. Increasing Feet increases Inches in direct proportion. A common mistake is entering a mixed measurement such as “5 ft 8 in” into this single decimal field; convert the additional inches separately or enter the entire length in inches.
Inches follows the same accepted numeric format and domain. A realistic entry is 60. Editing Inches changes Feet by dividing the input by 12. Do not type quotation marks or abbreviations in the box, because the fixed “in” adornment already supplies the unit. Zero is valid and represents zero length.

How the conversion works
Inches to feet: feet = inches ÷ 12
The factor 12 applies to ordinary linear length. According to the current federal table of customary units, NIST's General Tables of Units of Measurement lists 12 inches as one foot. Precision, fractions, and common mistakes
The calculator keeps full JavaScript numeric precision in its canonical model and formats results with up to 12 decimal places, trimming unnecessary zeros. Repeating decimal results can occur when inches are divided by 12 – for example, 100 inches equals 8.333333333333... feet. In practical measuring work, round only to the precision supported by the measuring tool. A tape marked to the nearest sixteenth of an inch cannot justify a result claimed to thousandths of an inch.
Do not use the linear factor for areas or volumes. One square foot equals 144 square inches because 12 × 12 = 144, and one cubic foot equals 1,728 cubic inches because 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728. Also distinguish decimal feet from feet-and-inches notation: 5.5 feet equals 5 feet 6 inches, not 5 feet 5 inches.
