How to use the feet converter

What this calculator does

This calculator converts one non-negative length expressed in feet into ten related units. It covers millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, yards, statute miles, nautical miles, solar radii, and light-years. It is useful when a measurement is supplied in feet but a drawing, specification, travel calculation, science problem, or international document expects another unit. The conversion is an exact mathematical identity when the underlying unit definition is exact; it is not a measurement of an object and cannot improve the accuracy of the original measurement.

When to use it

Use it when translating room dimensions from feet into metric units, checking construction or product dimensions, converting elevation or distance data, comparing statute and nautical distances, or expressing an unusually large or small length in a scientific unit. For the metric relationship, the internationally defined factor is one foot equals exactly 0.3048 meter, as documented in the NIST guide to SI units of length.

How to calculate

1. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration value of 12 feet. The results and a validated Excel workbook are ready immediately.
2. Replace Length in feet with your own value. Enter digits with an optional period for decimals, such as 8, 8.5, or 0.25. Commas, unit letters, and scientific notation are rejected to avoid ambiguous input.
3. Read Length in meters as the primary result, then use the result cards for centimeters, inches, yards, and miles. The complete table shows every supported unit.
4. Select Download Excel to create a fresh workbook from the current validated value. The workbook includes summary, inputs, and conversion sheets.
5. Select Reset to clear the demonstration and all results. Reset may disable the download until a complete valid value is entered again.

Input guide

Length in feet is the only input and is required. It accepts a finite decimal from 0 through 1e150 using a period as the decimal separator. A realistic example is 12 feet. Larger values increase every converted result proportionally, while 0 produces 0 in every unit. Negative lengths, blank input, commas, letters, percent signs, and values large enough to overflow are rejected. A common mistake is entering feet-and-inches notation such as 5' 8"; convert that mixed notation to decimal feet first.

Output guide

Length in meters is the main metric result and equals feet multiplied by 0.3048. Length in centimeters and the table rows for millimeters and kilometers use the same metric base. Length in inches equals feet multiplied by 12; Length in yards equals feet divided by 3; and Length in miles equals feet divided by 5,280. The table also reports nautical miles using the internationally accepted 1,852-meter nautical mile, summarized by the NIST length-unit guidance. Solar radii and light-years are estimates in the sense that their displayed decimal is rounded, although the model uses fixed standard conversion constants. Every output is driven only by the feet input; no result is a recommendation or forecast.

Worked example

The startup example uses 12 feet. Multiplying 12 by 0.3048 gives exactly 3.6576 meters. Multiplying 12 by 30.48 gives 365.76 centimeters, and multiplying by 12 gives 144 inches. Dividing 12 by 3 gives 4 yards, while dividing by 5,280 gives about 0.00227273 mile. These same values appear in the first-open result cards, table, and Excel workbook.
