How to use the energy conversion calculator
What this calculator does. This tool converts a finite energy quantity from one supported unit to another by using the joule as a common reference. It is useful when a value is reported in electrical units such as kilowatt-hours, thermal units such as BTU or calories, mechanical units such as foot-pounds, or atomic units such as electronvolts. It performs a unit identity, not an efficiency, cost, power, or fuel-consumption estimate. The underlying quantity must already be energy.
When to use it. Use the calculator to translate an electricity meter reading into megajoules, compare a heating specification stated in BTU with an SI value, convert laboratory energies between electronvolts and joules, or standardize mixed-unit data before an engineering calculation. The NIST energy conversion factors provide authoritative relationships for many of these units.

Input guide. Energy value is required and accepts a signed decimal or scientific notation under the en-US convention: use a period for the decimal separator, optional commas only as correct three-digit grouping, and forms such as 1250, 1,250.5, or 1.25e3. The value must be finite; blank text, malformed grouping, ambiguous decimal-comma text such as 1,5, and overflow are rejected. A realistic example is 12.5. Negative energy values are accepted because changes in energy or signed work can be negative, although many physical inventories use nonnegative magnitudes. Convert from is required and identifies the unit attached to the entered number. Convert to is required and selects the unit used for the main result. Changing either unit changes the numerical scale but not the underlying energy. A common mistake is entering power, such as kilowatts, which is energy per time rather than energy.
Output guide. Converted energy is the exact unit conversion displayed with adaptive significant digits. Energy in joules is the canonical SI representation that drives every output. Conversion factor is the multiplier from the selected source unit to the selected target unit; it can be less than, equal to, or greater than one. The summary pills repeat the source amount, joule-scale magnitude, and factor for quick scanning. The table columns Unit, Equivalent value, and Typical context show the same energy in eight useful units and identify where each is commonly encountered. Zero converts to zero exactly. Large or tiny outputs may use scientific notation. Negative outputs preserve the sign. These are exact identities up to the stated conversion definitions and display rounding, not recommendations.
Worked example. The startup state uses 1 kWh. Because one kilowatt-hour equals 1,000 watt-hours and one watt-hour equals 3,600 joules, the canonical value is 3,600,000 J. One megajoule is 1,000,000 J, so the target value is 3,600,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 3.6 MJ. The live result, table, and workbook all use that same canonical calculation. NIST also states that a kilowatt-hour is 3.6 × 106 joules, while the BIPM SI Brochure describes the SI system in which the joule is the coherent energy unit.
How the conversion model works
Each supported unit has a fixed factor that expresses one unit in joules. The calculator first multiplies the entered value by the source factor, producing a canonical joule amount. It then divides that amount by the target factor. This two-step method avoids maintaining a separate formula for every possible pair and keeps the table and workbook consistent.
Some unit definitions deserve care. This calculator uses the thermochemical calorie (4.184 J), the International Table BTU (1,055.05585262 J), and the exact post-2019 electronvolt relationship based on the elementary charge. The NIST energy-equivalence resource is especially useful for atomic-scale conversions. A US therm is treated as exactly 100,000 BTUIT, and one ton of TNT as 4.184 gigajoules.
Interpreting very large and very small numbers
Energy spans an unusually wide range. Household electricity is conveniently reported in kilowatt-hours, heating in BTU, industrial fuel in megajoules or gigajoules, and particle energies in electronvolts. A single physical quantity can therefore have numerical representations separated by dozens of orders of magnitude. Scientific notation is not a warning; it is often the clearest display. For example, 1 joule is about 6.24 × 1018 electronvolts, while 1 electronvolt is about 1.60 × 10 – 19 joule.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not confuse energy with power. Watts and kilowatts are rates; watt-hours and kilowatt-hours are energy.
- Check whether a calorie means the thermochemical calorie, an International Table calorie, or a food Calorie. This calculator labels the thermochemical definition explicitly.
- Keep the unit attached to the number. Entering 500 as joules when the source was 500 kilojoules creates a thousandfold error.
- Use the table as a cross-check, not as a comparison of “more” or “less” energy. Every row represents the same amount.
