This calculator converts between drops and milliliters using the common approximation that one drop equals 0.05 mL, or 20 drops equal 1 mL. Real drops can differ because surface tension, viscosity, opening size, and dispensing technique change the volume released.

Drops accepts a required nonnegative decimal number when that row is the one you edit. The unit is gtt. A realistic value is 20. Increasing it increases every converted volume proportionally. Enter plain U.S.-style decimals such as 12.5; commas, scientific notation, unit text, negative values, and ambiguous decimal-comma forms are rejected. Milliliters follows the same input rules in mL. A realistic value is 1. Increasing it raises the corresponding drop count at 20 drops per mL. Avoid typing “1 mL” into the field because the unit already appears beside it.

Output guide

Formula and assumptions

The forward formula is milliliters = drops × 0.05. The reverse formula is drops = milliliters ÷ 0.05, which is the same as multiplying by 20. Microliters equal mL × 1,000. U.S. fluid ounces equal mL × 0.0338140227. The calculator keeps full precision internally and rounds only the displayed text.

A drop is not a universal physical standard. The general 0.05 mL estimate is common for everyday conversion, but calibrated medical devices use a specified drop factor. Practical interpretation

Use the result as a planning estimate whenever the dispensing hardware is unknown. For higher accuracy, collect a known number of drops in a graduated syringe or cylinder, read the total mL, and divide by the number of drops to determine your device-specific average. Repeat the test several times because individual drops vary. For regulated, clinical, or safety-critical work, follow the instrument calibration and product instructions rather than a generic conversion.
