Length in decimeters is an optional driving field, but at least one of the two length fields must contain a valid value. Enter a finite non-negative decimal in dm, such as 34.98. A period is the supported decimal separator; commas, scientific notation, unit text, negative numbers, and infinite values are rejected. Increasing this value increases every equivalent length proportionally. A common mistake is moving the decimal point the wrong way: converting dm to m requires division by ten.
Length in meters is the reverse driving field. Enter a finite non-negative decimal in m, such as 3.498. Editing it multiplies the value by ten to derive decimeters. The same strict format rules apply. Do not type “m” into the box because the unit is already shown beside the field. When both fields are populated, the most recently edited field controls the calculation so there is no circular rounding.

Why the decimal point moves one place
The prefix deci- represents one tenth. That makes the decimeter a tenth of the meter and means there are exactly ten decimeters in one meter. Dividing by ten moves the decimal point one place to the left, while multiplying by ten moves it one place to the right. This is why 77.8 dm becomes 7.78 m, and 12 m becomes 120 dm.
Precision, rounding, and measurement quality
The mathematical conversion factor is exact, but a measured length may not be exact. Enter only as many digits as your source measurement justifies. The calculator retains finite numeric precision internally and formats the display to a practical maximum of 12 significant digits. Common conversion mistakes
Do not multiply when converting decimeters to meters; that would make the result one hundred times too large relative to the correct answer.
