Volume in cups accepts a required nonnegative decimal using a period as the decimal separator, such as 20, 10.5, or 0.25. It represents U.S. customary cups, not metric cups or dry-volume cups. Increasing the cups value increases every result proportionally. Do not enter unit text, commas as decimal separators, scientific notation, negative quantities, or more than one decimal point.
Volume in gallons accepts the same numeric format and represents U.S. liquid gallons. A realistic example is 1.25. Increasing gallons raises cups by a factor of 16 and changes all equivalent units proportionally. Do not confuse the U.S. gallon with the larger Imperial gallon. NIST's tables of U.S. customary units identify the U.S. gallon as 128 U.S. fluid ounces.

Worked example

Formula and unit notes
Gallons = Cups ÷ 16 | Cups = Gallons × 16
Because the conversion factor is fixed, every related volume changes linearly. Doubling cups doubles gallons; halving gallons halves cups. This makes quick mental checks easy: 8 cups is 0.5 gallon, 16 cups is 1 gallon, and 32 cups is 2 gallons.
This calculator deliberately uses U.S. customary measures. In nutrition labeling, a “cup” may be treated as 240 milliliters for labeling purposes, as explained in the FDA's guidance on metric equivalents of household measures.
