Input guide
Cubic inches is a required nonnegative number in in³. The accepted format is a plain decimal using a period, with optional comma grouping in conventional U.S. positions, such as 1,386 or 1386.25. Increasing this value increases every converted result in direct proportion. Zero is valid and converts to zero, while negative values, scientific notation, mixed units, and ambiguous decimal commas are rejected. A common mistake is entering a length in inches rather than a volume in cubic inches.
Gallon standard is a required choice. The U.S. liquid gallon equals exactly 231 cubic inches. The Imperial gallon equals exactly 4.54609 liters and is larger than the U.S. liquid gallon. For the same cubic-inch volume, selecting Imperial therefore produces fewer gallons. Do not infer the standard from the word “gallon” alone; check the source specification. Liters expresses the same input using the exact relationship 1 in³ = 0.016387064 L. Cubic feet divides cubic inches by 1,728. Accuracy, rounding, and common mistakes
The calculator keeps full numeric precision internally and rounds only the displayed text. The Excel workbook stores typed numbers rather than copied display strings. For a measured physical object, however, the final accuracy cannot exceed the quality of the dimensions or source capacity used to obtain the cubic-inch input. Avoid confusing square inches with cubic inches, mixing inside and outside dimensions, or assuming that a nominal container volume equals safe working capacity.
