How to use the cubic feet calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator finds the volume of a rectangular box, room, container, excavation, or material bed. It converts the three entered dimensions to feet and applies the rectangular-prism identity volume = length × width × height. The primary result can be shown in cubic feet, cubic inches, cubic yards, cubic meters, or liters. It does not calculate irregular shapes, curved containers, packing efficiency, usable appliance capacity, compaction, waste allowance, or material weight.
When to use it
Use it to estimate the internal space of a crate or appliance, compare storage volumes, find the volume of a rectangular soil or gravel area, or convert mixed-unit dimensions before ordering material. How to calculate
- The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: 30 inches by 36 inches by 25 inches. Its result and example Excel workbook are ready immediately.
- Replace Length, Width, and Height with your measurements. Choose the unit beside each field independently, so mixed units such as feet, inches, and centimeters are valid.
- Choose the Primary output unit. This changes the prominent result but does not alter the physical volume.

Input guide
Length, Width, and Height are required positive decimal measurements. Each accepts ordinary U.S.-style decimal notation, such as 12, 12.5, or 1,250.75. The available units are feet, inches, yards, centimeters, and meters. A realistic example is 30 inches for Length. Increasing any one dimension increases volume in direct proportion while the other two remain fixed. Zero, negative values, scientific notation, decimal commas such as 1,5, repeated separators, and embedded unit text are rejected rather than silently reinterpreted. Select the correct unit instead of typing a suffix into the field.
Primary output unit is required and selects only the prominent display format. Choose cubic feet for building and storage work in U.S. customary units, cubic yards for bulk landscaping materials, cubic meters for SI work, cubic inches for small objects, or liters for capacity comparisons. Changing this control never changes the underlying size.
Output guide
Volume is the main converted result in the chosen output unit. Cubic feet, Cubic yards, Cubic meters, and Liters show equivalent volumes calculated from the same model. A zero result is not shown because every dimension must be greater than zero. Very large values remain estimates only to the precision of the measurements you entered. The summary pills report the current input-unit combination, formula, and validation state.
The Dimension and volume details table lists each measure, its entered value, its converted value in feet, and its role in the multiplication. The final Volume row shows the entered-unit product when all three units match, otherwise it identifies the mixed-unit input and gives the canonical cubic-foot product. These are exact mathematical conversions subject to displayed rounding, not purchasing or engineering recommendations.
Worked example
The startup example uses 30 in × 36 in × 25 in. Converting each dimension gives 2.5 ft × 3 ft × 2.083333 ft. Multiplication yields exactly 15.625 ft³. The same volume equals 27,000 in³, about 0.578704 yd³, 0.442451 m³, and 442.451 liters. These values match the first-open result cards, table, and workbook checkpoints.
How the conversion works
Linear conversion factors must be applied before multiplication because volume scales with the cube of length. One inch is exactly 1/12 foot, one yard is exactly 3 feet, and one meter is exactly 1/0.3048 foot. Therefore one cubic foot equals 1,728 cubic inches, 1/27 cubic yard, exactly 0.028316846592 cubic meter, and exactly 28.316846592 liters. Practical interpretation and common mistakes
Measurement uncertainty is multiplied along with the dimensions. A room measured to the nearest inch should not be presented as though its final volume were known to many significant digits. Use the extra displayed decimals for conversion consistency, then round appropriately for the real task. Material orders may require an additional waste, settlement, or compaction allowance, but those adjustments are intentionally outside this calculator.
Do not mix area and volume: square feet describe surface area, while cubic feet describe three-dimensional space. Do not divide inch measurements by 12 after multiplying unless you divide the cubic-inch product by 1,728. For bulk material, confirm whether the supplier sells loose, compacted, or installed volume.
