Input guide. Length in centimeters is a required nonnegative decimal measured in cm. It accepts ordinary U.S.-style decimal notation such as 12.5 and grouped values such as 1,250.75; it rejects decimal commas, scientific notation, unit letters pasted into the field, negative lengths, and numbers so large that conversion would overflow. A realistic example is 2.54 cm, which becomes 25.4 mm. Increasing the centimeter value increases every displayed equivalent proportionally. A common mistake is to divide by 10 when converting from centimeters to millimeters; the correct operation is multiplication. Length in millimeters is also a required nonnegative decimal, measured in mm, with the same accepted notation. A realistic example is 9 mm, which becomes 0.9 cm. Increasing millimeters increases the corresponding centimeters proportionally. A frequent mistake is to multiply during the reverse conversion; millimeters must be divided by 10 to obtain centimeters. Why the factor is exactly 10
The prefix centi- represents one hundredth, so 1 cm is 0.01 m. The prefix milli- represents one thousandth, so 1 mm is 0.001 m. Dividing 0.01 by 0.001 gives 10, which means every centimeter contains exactly ten millimeters.
Precision, formatting, and common mistakes
The conversion factor is exact, but a measured value may not be. Preserve only the precision justified by the original measurement. For example, a ruler reading of 3.2 cm converts to 32 mm, but that does not automatically imply greater measurement accuracy. Unit symbols are case-sensitive: use lowercase cm and mm, and place a space between the number and the symbol in normal writing. Do not square or cube the factor unless you are converting area or volume. A length conversion uses 10, an area conversion between cm² and mm² uses 100, and a volume conversion between cm³ and mm³ uses 1,000. This calculator is intentionally limited to one-dimensional length.
