How the conversion formula works
A centimeter is one hundredth of a meter. Because the international inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters, total inches equal centimeters divided by 2.54. A foot contains exactly 12 inches, so decimal feet equal centimeters divided by 30.48. To create a mixed measurement, the calculator takes the whole-number portion of decimal feet and converts the fractional remainder back to inches.

Common mistakes and precision choices
- Do not treat the decimal part of feet as inches. For example, 5.5 feet means 5 feet 6 inches, not 5 feet 5 inches.
- Do not round the decimal-feet value before converting the fractional part to inches; early rounding can shift the mixed result.
- For construction or manufacturing, verify the tolerance required by the drawing or standard. A rounded two-decimal inch result may be too coarse for close-fit work.
