How to use the cm height conversion calculator
What this calculator does. This tool converts one physical height between centimeters, meters, millimeters, inches, decimal feet, and the familiar feet-plus-inches notation. It is useful when a form, travel document, sports roster, clothing guide, or conversation uses a different measurement system from the one you normally use. It performs a unit identity, not an assessment of health, growth, eligibility, or an ideal height.
When to use it. Use it to translate a metric height for a U.S. form, convert a feet-and-inches measurement for an international application, check whether two differently written heights are equivalent, or create a clean conversion record for a spreadsheet.
How to calculate. The calculator opens with a demonstration height of 175 centimeters, so every result and the example Excel workbook are ready immediately.
- Choose Enter height as: either Centimeters or Feet / inches. Switching mode converts the current valid value rather than merely changing its label.
- Replace the demonstration value. In centimeter mode, type the complete height in Height in centimeters. In imperial mode, enter the whole-number Feet and the remaining Inches.
- Read Height in feet / inches as the primary result, then use Height in centimeters, Height in meters, Total inches, and Decimal feet for other formats. The Equivalent units table shows the same canonical height with more precision.
- Select Download Excel to export the current valid inputs and results as a real XLSX workbook. Reset clears the demonstration data and calculated state; Excel export then remains unavailable until you enter a complete valid height again.
Input guide. Height in centimeters is required in centimeter mode. Enter a plain decimal from 0.1 through 300, such as 175; use a period for decimals and do not add “cm,” commas, or scientific notation. A larger value produces proportionally larger results in every other unit. Feet is required in feet/inches mode and accepts a whole number from 0 through 9, such as 5. Inches is also required in that mode and accepts a decimal from 0 up to but not including 12, such as 8.9. Twelve inches should be carried into the feet field rather than entered as 12. Negative heights, ambiguous decimal commas, and pasted unit symbols are rejected.
Output guide. Height in feet / inches separates the converted total into whole feet and remaining inches. Height in centimeters is the canonical metric value. Height in meters divides centimeters by 100. Total inches keeps the entire height in one imperial unit, while Decimal feet divides total inches by 12. The summary pills repeat centimeters, feet/inches, and meters for quick scanning. The Equivalent units table adds millimeters and states each conversion basis. These outputs are exact mathematical conversions of the entered number, although the original measurement itself may be rounded.
Worked example. The startup value is 175 cm. Because one inch equals exactly 2.54 cm, 175 ÷ 2.54 = 68.8976378 inches. Dividing by 12 gives 5 whole feet with 8.8976378 inches remaining, displayed as 5 ft 8.90 in. The same height is 1.7500 m, 68.8976 in, and 5.7415 ft. These values match the first-open results and workbook.
Learn more. NIST explains that the international inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters, which is the foundation of the inch-to-centimeter calculation. For broader unit conventions, see the NIST conversion-factor table for inches.
How the conversion works
The calculator first reduces every valid input to centimeters. A feet-and-inches entry uses the identity centimeters = feet × 30.48 + inches × 2.54. A centimeter entry is already canonical. All displayed units, the table, the live summary, and the Excel workbook are then derived from that single value, which prevents independent rounding paths from drifting apart.
For the reverse direction, total inches equal centimeters divided by 2.54. Whole feet are the integer part of total inches divided by 12, and remaining inches are total inches minus 12 times the whole feet. The BIPM definition of the metre provides the SI foundation, while NIST advises matching displayed precision to the precision of the original measurement in its guidance on writing with SI units.
Precision and common mistakes
Unit factors can be exact while a height measurement is not. A value recorded as 175 cm may have been rounded to the nearest centimeter, so reporting many converted decimals can imply more measurement precision than exists. Use the prominent rounded outputs for everyday communication and the detailed table when you need to audit the arithmetic.
- Do not enter 5.8 to mean 5 feet 8 inches; 5.8 decimal feet equals 5 feet 9.6 inches.
- Do not place 12 or more in the Inches field. Carry each group of 12 inches into one additional foot.
- Do not mix a comma decimal convention with an en-US input field. Enter 175.5, not 175,5.
- Do not use a conversion result as evidence about medical growth or fitness. It only expresses the same length in another unit.
