Raising the CCF value increases every equivalent volume proportionally. A common mistake is reading CCF as one cubic foot rather than one hundred cubic feet.

U.S. liquid gallons is the reverse source field and accepts the same plain nonnegative decimal format, for example 5,700 should be entered as 5700. Editing it calculates CCF by division. This calculator uses the U.S. liquid gallon, not the Imperial gallon. NIST identifies a U.S. gallon as 231 cubic inches in its conversion-factor tables.

The factor follows from customary-unit definitions: one cubic foot contains 1,728 cubic inches, one U.S. liquid gallon contains 231 cubic inches, and one CCF contains 100 cubic feet. Therefore, 100 × 1,728 ÷ 231 = 748.051948051948 gallons per CCF. For quick mental estimates, 748.05 gallons per CCF is usually adequate, but the calculator retains the longer factor.

Interpreting water-use results

Gallons often make utility consumption easier to picture. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that the average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water per day at home in its overview of how households use water. Comparing a billing-period total with daily use can help you notice a surprising change, although a conversion alone cannot identify its cause.

When a converted total looks unusually high, check the meter-reading dates, occupancy, irrigation, seasonal use, and billing units before drawing conclusions. EPA WaterSense also recommends routine leak checks and practical conservation measures in its water-saving guidance. Keep in mind that utilities may bill in whole CCF increments or use local rounding conventions, so your invoice may not exactly equal a simple multiplication of the displayed rounded figure.

Common mistakes

  • Using an Imperial gallon factor instead of the U.S. liquid gallon factor.
  • Multiplying gallons by 748.0519 when converting back to CCF; reverse conversion requires division.
