Why cc and mL are equal

A cubic centimeter is the volume of a cube measuring one centimeter on each side. Because one centimeter is one-tenth of a decimeter, a cubic centimeter is one-thousandth of a cubic decimeter. The liter is the special name for a cubic decimeter, so one-thousandth of a liter is one milliliter. The chain is therefore exact: 1 cm³ = 1 mL and 1,000 cm³ = 1,000 mL = 1 L.

The abbreviation cc is common in practical contexts, while cm³ is the formal cubic-unit notation. The preferred symbol for milliliter is mL, using an uppercase L to reduce confusion with the numeral 1. NIST provides additional guidance on writing and interpreting metric volume units.

Precision and common mistakes

No approximation factor is needed between cc and mL. A result can still look rounded when the entered value contains many decimal places, because the interface uses a compact display format. The workbook retains the finite numeric value used by the model. Avoid treating cc as a mass unit: converting a volume to grams requires the material's density. Also avoid mixing cubic centimeters with centiliters; 1 cL equals 10 mL, not 1 mL.
