Input guide. Acres is a required nonnegative decimal area when that is the field you choose to edit. It accepts digits, optional comma grouping, and one period decimal separator; for example, 3500 or 3,500.5. Higher acreage always produces proportionally higher values in every output. Do not enter unit letters, a percent sign, scientific notation, or a decimal comma such as 1,5. Square miles follows the same accepted format and domain; for example, 5 converts to 3,200 acres. Why the conversion is simple
An acre and a square mile are both units of area in the U.S. customary system. Their ratio is fixed, so the conversion is linear: doubling the acreage doubles the square-mile result, and halving it halves every equivalent area. The formulas are:

Interpreting land-area figures
Unit conversion does not change the underlying boundary or classification. Two agencies can report different areas for the same named place if one includes water or uses a different geographic boundary. When comparing datasets, verify the reporting year, boundary definition, and whether the figure represents land area, water area, or total area. For practical scale, one quarter of a square mile is 160 acres, one half is 320 acres, and two square miles are 1,280 acres. These landmarks are useful for mental checks before relying on a converted value.
