The conversion is an exact unit identity: one acre contains 43,560 square feet. Input guide
Area in acres is a required nonnegative decimal measured in acres. It accepts plain U.S.-style numbers such as 2.5 or grouped values such as 1,250. A larger value increases every output proportionally. Do not use a decimal comma such as 2,5, scientific notation, unit letters, or a negative number. Area in square feet is the reverse-entry field and follows the same format rules; for example, 108,900 is valid. Editing either field makes it the source of truth, so avoid typing conflicting values into both fields in rapid succession.
Output guide
Area in square feet is the exact converted area in ft² and is driven by the most recently edited input. Area in acres shows the reciprocal conversion. Square yards divides square feet by 9. Square meters multiplies square feet by the exact international-foot area factor 0.09290304. Hectares divides square meters by 10,000. Equivalent square side is the square root of the area in square feet; it is a geometric comparison, not a claim that the parcel is square. Zero means zero area. Very large valid values remain mathematical conversions and should not be treated as surveyed measurements.
Worked example
For the startup value, multiply 2.5 acres by 43,560 square feet per acre:
2.5 ac × 43,560 ft²/ac = 108,900 ft²
Then divide 108,900 by 9 to get 12,100 square yards. Multiplying by 0.09290304 gives 10,117.141056 square meters, or 1.0117141056 hectares. A square covering 108,900 square feet would have sides of exactly 330 feet.

Formula and interpretation
The forward formula is square feet = acres × 43,560. The reverse formula is acres = square feet ÷ 43,560. Because both are linear, doubling acreage doubles every converted area, and halving square footage halves the acreage. The NIST Handbook 44 area tables provide general U.S. customary unit relationships, while a USGS reservoir-area data description gives a practical example of converting acres to square feet by multiplying by 43,560.
Common mistakes
- Do not confuse square feet, an area unit, with linear feet, a length unit.
- An acre can have any shape; 208.71 feet is only the approximate side of a one-acre square.
- Rounding too early can create visible differences in metric results. Keep the full value until final display.
- Parcel records may use surveyed or legal descriptions whose precision is not improved by unit conversion.
