How to use this acreage calculator
What this calculator does. This tool estimates the area of a rectangular parcel from its width and length, converts that area into several common land units, and optionally multiplies the result by a price per selected area unit. It is useful for planning, preliminary budgeting, material coverage, agricultural layouts, and quick comparisons between listings. It does not replace a boundary survey, deed review, title report, appraisal, or professional measurement of an irregular parcel.
When to use it. Use it to check the advertised acreage of a rectangular lot, estimate how much ground cover or seed is needed, compare land prices quoted per acre versus per hectare, or create a worksheet for an early project budget. For curved, angled, or multi-sided parcels, split the site into simpler shapes or use surveyed coordinates instead of treating the whole site as one rectangle.
How to calculate. The calculator opens with a ready-to-use demonstration: a width of 264 feet, a length of 330 feet, acres as the primary area unit, and a price of $12,500 per acre. A validated example workbook is immediately available.
- Replace Width and Length with the measured sides of your parcel, then choose the unit beside each dimension.
- Select the Primary area unit you want for the headline result and pricing basis.
- Optionally enter Price per selected area unit and choose a Currency. Leave price blank when only area is needed.

Input guide. Width and Length are required positive decimals. Accepted examples include 264, 330.5, or grouped U.S. notation such as 1,250; scientific notation and decimal commas are rejected. Each dimension can use feet, meters, yards, kilometers, or miles. Changing either value changes area proportionally, while changing a dimension unit converts the interpretation of that number. A common mistake is mixing a measurement written in feet with a unit selector left on meters. Primary area unit is required and controls the headline display plus the denominator used by the price. Price per selected area unit is optional, must be zero or greater, and accepts a plain U.S.-format decimal such as 12500 or 12,500.00. Currency sets the symbol and formatting only; the calculator does not perform exchange-rate conversion.
Output guide. Area is the exact rectangular identity width × length after both dimensions are converted to meters, then expressed in the selected area unit. Square meters, Hectares, and Square feet are equivalent conversions of the same canonical area. Total price is an estimate equal to area in the selected primary unit multiplied by the optional unit price; it shows an em dash when no price is entered. The summary pills repeat the selected area, hectares, and square feet for quick scanning. The Area conversion table lists the same land area in acres, hectares, square meters, square feet, square yards, square kilometers, and square miles. Zero area is not treated as a valid parcel here; a missing or nonpositive dimension produces a field error and blocks export.
Worked example. The startup parcel is 264 ft × 330 ft. Multiplying gives 87,120 square feet. Because one international acre equals 43,560 square feet, 87,120 ÷ 43,560 = exactly 2 acres. The same area is about 8,093.713 square meters or 0.8094 hectares. At $12,500 per acre, the estimated total is 2 × $12,500 = $25,000. These values match the initial screen and exported workbook.

Formula, assumptions, and practical interpretation
Area in m² = width × width-unit factor × length × length-unit factor
The calculator first converts both dimensions to meters, multiplies them, and then converts the resulting square meters to the requested area unit. This order prevents errors caused by multiplying unlike units. The international foot is treated as exactly 0.3048 meter, and the international acre is 4,046.8564224 square meters. A hectare is exactly 10,000 square meters. The U.S. Geological Survey commonly uses 43,560 square feet per acre in area calculations, as illustrated in its area-computation guidance.
Because the model assumes a rectangle, measurement quality matters as much as arithmetic. If opposite sides differ, use a surveyed method or divide the site into smaller polygons rather than averaging casually. For legal descriptions, infrastructure design, or a purchase decision, rely on licensed survey data. Displayed values are rounded for readability, while the workbook stores the underlying numeric values so later spreadsheet calculations preserve more precision.
