How to use the thinset calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates the amount of cement-based thinset mortar needed beneath tile. It converts a rectangular project area and an average finished mortar-bed thickness into wet mixed volume, wet weight after a waste allowance, dry mortar weight, whole bags, purchased weight, and material cost. It is useful for purchase planning, bid checks, comparing bag sizes, and testing how trowel choice affects consumption. It does not select a mortar for a particular substrate, certify coverage, or replace the product data sheet and tile-system instructions.
When to use it
Use it while preparing a floor or wall tile shopping list, comparing two trowel or tile-size options, checking whether leftover bags are likely to cover a small area, or building a preliminary material budget before obtaining a supplier quote.
How to calculate

Input guide
Length of the area and Width of the area are required positive decimal measurements in metres; examples are 3 and 2. Increasing either increases area and every quantity proportionally. Do not enter mixed units or decimal commas. Tile size / trowel guide is a required selection that supplies a typical 2 – 8 mm bed; it is a planning guide, not a product warranty. The selected guide updates Thinset thickness, a required positive decimal in millimetres; a thicker bed increases volume and weight directly. Confirm trowel guidance against the manufacturer's instructions and required mortar coverage.
Wastage allowance is a required percentage from 0% to 100%; 10% is a practical example. Higher waste increases wet and dry quantities but does not change geometric volume. Weight per bag is the required positive net dry weight in kilograms; 20 kg is the example. Smaller bags can increase the whole-bag count even when required dry weight is unchanged. Mixed thinset density is a required positive value in kg/m³; the example uses 2,162. Product type and water content affect density, so use manufacturer data when available rather than confusing dry bulk density with mixed density.
Dry material share is required from greater than 0% through 100%; 50% means half of the mixed weight is dry mortar. Increasing it increases dry weight and bags. This is a mass fraction, not a water-to-powder volume ratio. Cost per bag accepts a nonnegative USD amount; $25 is the example. It affects only Total cost. Enter 0 when you want a quantity estimate without pricing.
Output guide
Bags to buy is an integer purchase estimate rounded upward, because partial bags are generally not purchasable. Total area is the exact rectangular identity length × width. Volume needed is area × average bed thickness before waste. Wet mix with waste applies density and waste to that volume. Dry thinset needed applies the dry-material share. Purchased dry weight equals bags × bag weight, so it is normally greater than the exact dry requirement. Total cost equals full bags × cost per bag. A zero cost can be meaningful; zero or negative required dimensions are invalid.
Worked example
The opening example has 3 m × 2 m = 6.00 m². A 4 mm bed is 0.004 m, so geometric volume is 6 × 0.004 = 0.024 m³. Multiplying by 2,162 kg/m³ and 1.10 for waste gives 57.08 kg of wet mix. At a 50% dry share, dry mortar is 28.54 kg. Dividing by 20 kg per bag gives 1.43 bags, which rounds up to 2 bags. Purchased dry weight is 40.00 kg and, at $25 per bag, total cost is $50.00.

Formula and planning notes
Volume = area × thickness. Wet mix = volume × mixed density × (1 + waste). Dry mortar = wet mix × dry share. Bags = round up(dry mortar ÷ bag weight).
Thinset is a tile-setting mortar whose composition and intended applications vary by product. A polymer-enriched mortar may be specified for some tile and substrate combinations, while other assemblies require a different chemistry. For context, MAPEI describes its polymer-enriched ceramic tile mortar as intended for thin-set floor and wall applications. Product-specific limitations always outrank a generic calculator.
Actual yield also depends on notch geometry, trowel angle, substrate flatness, mortar transfer, and back-buttering. Lightweight products can cover more area per bag than conventional products; for example, the ProLite large-format mortar product information notes that a lighter bag can provide coverage comparable with a traditional heavier bag. That is why this calculator exposes density, dry share, and bag weight instead of assuming that every product has identical yield.
Common estimating mistakes
- Using the trowel notch height as the finished bed thickness without accounting for ridges collapsing beneath the tile.
- Ignoring substrate variation, back-buttering, waste in the bucket, and mortar discarded after pot life.
- Applying a coverage figure from one product to another with a different density or lightweight formulation.
- Rounding the exact dry requirement down instead of rounding the bag count up.
- Buying solely from the estimate without checking tile coverage requirements and the mortar manufacturer's instructions.
